The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate a comparison of the infratructure of educational institute cafe before with now.

overall, as compared to the previous design, several changes have been done in the cafe. Some places have been renamed while some has been newly designed.

To begin with, in front of Kitchen, the Serving area for foods and drinks has been replaced with Hot meals. In addition, the Staff dining rooms have been divided into two separated rooms with distint names of 'Take away food' for left one while 'Coffee bar' for the right one, respectively. Furthermore, Bin on the right side has been enlarged and renamed with Recycling bins.

Looking at the maps in more detail, Salad bar has been created on the left side of the cafe, which were missing in the previous design. As well as, there has been a Barbecue just outside the cafe. In front of Barbecue, a huge Outdoor seating area has been created.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main changes and selecting key features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, such as the transformation of the staff dining areas and the addition of outdoor seating. While the main features are reported accurately, some areas lack full development or detailed comparison, characteristic of the mid-tier performance. For instance, the exact spatial reconfiguration of the northern section is described, but other alterations, such as the salad bar and barbecue, could be integrated more smoothly into a comprehensive overview of the layout's evolution. The overall summary in the second sentence captures the general changes well, but further extension regarding how the whole functional flow of the space shifted would elevate the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically. The introduction sets out the purpose of the response, and body paragraphs attempt to guide the reader through specific areas of the plans using transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'Looking at the maps in more detail'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly disjointed, particularly in the transitions between sentences where referencing is not always completely fluid. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, body details, and concluding observations, though the paragraphs are somewhat brief and could benefit from tighter logical grouping of the indoor and outdoor transformations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to accomplish the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items and descriptive terms related to the visual data, such as 'infrastructure', 'reconfigured', and 'distinct names'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'infratructure' (spelling error), 'educational institute cafe', and phrasing like 'with distint names of 'Take away food' for left one'. Furthermore, some terms are repetitive or slightly unnatural in collocation. These errors in word choice and spelling do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, preventing the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and prepositional phrases such as 'Salad bar has been created on the left side of the cafe, which were missing in the previous design'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including article omissions ('cafe before with now', 'on right side', 'Bin on right side'), subject-verb agreement issues ('which were missing' referring to a singular salad bar), and awkward prepositional use. Punctuation and sentence structures generally allow the meaning to come through, and these errors rarely impede communication, but their frequency places the response firmly within this band.
