The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two designs illustrate the prior and modified version of college cafeteria. New plan is more modern and contemplated in various sections with occupying the outside area.
In the orignal design, kitchen and servicing area for food and beverages was in the northwest, whereas centric area with two rooms was used by the staff members for dining, and outside to that there was general area with tables and chairs for everyone. Southeast corner was used for toilets with waste bin outside.
After rennovation there is comprehensive changes made at the cafeteria. Kitchen and toilets are exactly where it was, although servicing area is now reconstructed for hot meals service. Both the dining rooms are now used for take away, with the coffe bar next to it. Waste bin was modified into recycling bin. Interior wall to the west is now used for salad bar. Outside area is occupied with barbecue corner with the huge seating area having tables and chairs.
Hence, the modified version is terrifically executed for better experince.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two plans. The introduction outlines the overall changes effectively, noting the shift toward a more modern layout and the expansion into the outdoor area. Key features such as the kitchen remaining in place, the conversion of staff dining rooms into take-away and coffee options, and the addition of the salad bar and outdoor seating are successfully identified. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or lack full clarity, such as the exact transformation of the bin area into recycling facilities. To reach a higher level, the response would need to provide a more rigorous and fully extended overview of all spatial re-allocations without minor generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the introduction to the description of the original design, followed by the modifications, and a concluding evaluation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct logical stages of the response. Cohesive devices are generally present, such as transitional phrases like 'In the orignal design' and 'After rennovation', though referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. Pronoun reference and substitution are handled adequately to guide the reader through the map comparison, but more sophisticated and seamless cohesive links would be required to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'comprehensive changes', 'reconstructed', and 'terrifically executed'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that slightly impede communication or reveal awkward phrasing, such as 'prior' instead of 'previous', 'contemplated' instead of 'compartmentalised' or 'divided', 'orignal', 'rennovation', 'coffe', and 'experince'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning of the visual data, these lexical slips and imprecise word choices prevent the response from demonstrating a higher level of lexical precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures when comparing the two plans. There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('kitchen and servicing area ... was'), preposition misuse ('outside to that'), and article omission or misuse. However, these errors do not seriously impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move into higher bands, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over prepositions and agreement across more ambitious syntactic structures.
