Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, as it is three words short of the 150-word minimum length requirement. While the candidate attempts to report the main features of the redesigned college cafe, such as the replacement of the staff dining rooms and the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue area, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. The overview is partially presented in the second paragraph, but details are repetitive across the body paragraphs, lacking a fully cohesive and comprehensive summary of all visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with an attempt at an overall structure, but the response lacks a clear and logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is disjointed, featuring several very short paragraphs that disrupt the flow of information. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, and occasionally inaccurate, with run-on sentences and comma splices used instead of proper conjunctions or full stops. Referencing between ideas is also imprecise, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial comparisons smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic changes in the plans. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes like "cofee" instead of coffee, and awkward word formations like "faciliy" instead of facility. Word choice is often repetitive, relying heavily on basic descriptors like "change" and "area." These inaccuracies and the restricted range of vocabulary occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined incorrectly by commas. When complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors such as missing articles, incorrect singular/plural forms like "two purpose at same area," and issues with verb tense consistency. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader throughout the text.
