Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. The overview captures the main changes, such as the addition of the salad bar, barbecue area, and outdoor seating. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive or lack full extension, sitting comfortably at the halfway mark. For instance, the transition from staff dining rooms to a take-away food and coffee bar is noted, but further detail on spatial reorganisations could have elevated the response. The text ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence ("Two doors have been added to connect the"), which stops short of a complete concluding thought.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and specific details of the two layouts. Information is generally organised logically, moving from general observations to specific spatial features. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on simple sequencing. Referencing could be smoother, and cohesive devices are at times basic or slightly underutilised. While the progression of ideas is discernible, the abrupt ending breaks the logical flow of the text, preventing it from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main spatial changes with terms like "redesigned," "facilities," "serving area," and "recycling feature." The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as "allocated" and "renovation," though some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as "intial plan" (spelling slip) and "serving food and drink was inside." These minor lexical errors and spelling mistakes do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the comparisons between the two floor plans.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as "The two floor plans depicts" (subject-verb agreement error), "All the serving food and drink was inside" (preposition and form issues), and the incomplete final sentence. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. These errors occur with some frequency but rarely impede overall comprehension, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the band.
