The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate a college cafe and shows how it was designed before and how it looks now.

The basic outline of both the cafes remain the same with an area for kitchen, toilets and seating. However, there are some additional details that have been added to the current plan of the cafe.

The old plan had a space for the kitchen along with a serving area, dining space dedicated for both customers and staff, and finally an area for toilets and hygiene.

On the other hand, the new plan displays a bunch of additions to the cafe. It consists of a kitchen along with distributed spaces as per the type of meals, such as hot meals or takeaways.

It also has a salad bar and a coffee bar just beside the takeaway food corner. At one corner, it has an outlet for hygiene, which includes bins and toilets. Furthermore, the new plan has an outdoor seating arrangement, completed with a barbeque station.

However, unlike the old plan, it doesn't have dining rooms for the staff.

The new plan is more spacious and also caters to various demands and trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, and it includes some useful comparisons, such as noting the removal of the staff dining rooms and the addition of outdoor seating. However, some aspects of the response are slightly under-developed or vague, such as referring to the toilets as an outlet for hygiene. While the key spatial changes are identified, a more detailed breakdown of the exact relocation of specific counters and facilities would elevate the response further, placing it comfortably between fulfilling basic requirements and achieving a fully extended overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs contrasting the old and new plans, and a concluding summary. Information is logically sequenced so the reader can follow the structural changes easily. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Furthermore', though referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical or basic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, the description of the old layout, the new additions, and the final concluding thought, contributing to an overall logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe the cafe plans. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'redesigned', 'arrangement', and 'barbeque station'. However, some word choices and collocations are slightly imprecise, such as 'an outlet for hygiene' instead of sanitary facilities or restrooms, and 'a bunch of additions' which is too informal for an academic task. Minor lexical inaccuracies are present, but they do not impede communication, showing room to develop a more precise and sophisticated academic register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'The plans illustrate... and shows how...' and 'Although...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The plans... shows' and 'both the cafes remain'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. Punctuation is generally controlled, and while complex sentences are attempted, increasing the frequency of error-free complex structures would help push the writing toward a higher level of grammatical control.
