The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagrams depict the changes in a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks today. \

In general, it can be clearly seen that the south area of a college cafe has experienced a big change by installing outdoor seating and barbeque, while the bin on east side has been replaced by recycling bins. A new salad bar has also been established on the west side of a college cafe.

Looking at the diagrams in more detail, there was a kitchen and serving area in the north-west side in which hot meals have replaced the serving area, although the kitchen is at the same place. On the right side of serving area, take away food and coffee bar sections now have taken place of staff dining rooms. In the east side, bin has been reformed by keeping recycling bin, while the toilet has occupied the similar position as its previous redesign.

Moving to the next, new outdoor seating arrangements and a barbeque section has been constructed on the south side, which was not available in its prior redesign.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two plans. You provide a clear overall summary of the major structural changes, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, barbecue, salad bar, and the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a coffee bar and take-away section. The response meets the requirement for a fully developed overview and adequately reports the specific spatial transformations. To reach a higher band, some of the detailed descriptions could be further extended, ensuring even greater precision when reporting the exact locations and modifications of every feature, such as the exact transformation of the eastern wall bins.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body divided by spatial features. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the macro-level changes from the finer details. However, the progression between sentences can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical, and referencing phrases like 'Moving to the next' or 'its prior redesign' slightly disrupt the natural flow of ideas. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between the spatial points being compared.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to architectural changes and campus facilities, such as 'redesigned', 'established', 'arrangements', and 'construction'. However, there are some imprecise word choices and slight awkwardness in collocations, such as 'bin has been reformed by keeping recycling bin' and 'its prior redesign', where 'previous layout' or 'former setup' would be much more natural. While these lexical slips do not impede communication, eliminating them and using more sophisticated phrasing would elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with a reasonable attempt at passive structures and subordinate clauses, such as 'which was not available in its prior redesign'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward prepositions, such as 'on east side' (missing an article), 'in the east side' (preposition choice), and 'take away food and coffee bar sections now have taken place of staff dining rooms' (missing article 'the place'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily. Greater control over articles and fixed prepositional phrases will help improve your grammatical accuracy.
