Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary summary of the changes shown in the cafe plans. While some main features are mentioned, such as the addition of the outdoor seating area, hot meals counter, and salad bar, the information is conveyed through a very limited and repetitive selection of details. Furthermore, the descriptions lack clarity and precision, failing to provide a well-developed comparison between the two layouts. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clearer overview of the main trends and changes, supporting them with a more comprehensive and logical selection of data from both diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in the way the text contrasts the cafe 'before' and 'today', but there is no clear overall progression. The writing is heavily fragmented into short, disjointed sentences and paragraphs rather than a cohesive report. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and inappropriately, notably the excessive use of informal connectors like 'moreover' and 'futhermore' to link almost every sentence. Paragraphing is poorly handled, resulting in a lack of logical flow between ideas. To improve, the writer should structure the response into a coherent introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive ties to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying on simple terms like 'cafe', 'good', and 'things' throughout the text. There are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'redesige' for redesign, 'uncomplete', 'surving', and 'singnificant'. These errors and the narrow range of vocabulary sometimes cause strain and difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a broader range of task-specific vocabulary and accurate collocations related to describing maps and spatial changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple, and attempts at more complex or descriptive forms are heavily flawed, such as 'its look like a normal cafe' or 'there are looking only a kitchen'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, including phrases like 'in the of its the table' and 'in the inside of cafe'. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student must work on constructing grammatically sound sentences, improving control over basic verb forms, and reducing error frequency across all structural types.
