Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the changes and detailing the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign. Key transformations are identified, such as the expansion of seating, the addition of outdoor facilities including a barbecue, and the conversion of staff rooms into a coffee bar and take-away area. However, some aspects lack clarity or are slightly underdeveloped, such as the vague description of the kitchen counter rearrangement ('dedicated hot meals behind of the kitchen'), which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the selection of features is relevant and provides a clear comparative summary of the two plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the original layout and finally the modernised changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the past layout, and the current layout. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In original design' and 'Following the reconstruction', though some referencing and transitions are a bit mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt sentence opening with 'overall' or awkward phrasing in transitional sentences. Nevertheless, the progression of information remains generally clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'modernized', 'reconstruction', and 'redevelopment'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that impact precision, including typos and awkward collocations like 'wider Varity', 'food station', 'combine food and drink', and 'Barbecue corner'. Word choices are generally sufficient to communicate the main points, but these slips in spelling and collocation prevent the vocabulary score from rising into higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at descriptive clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including missing articles ('in original design', 'toilet were located', 'single dustbin'), incorrect prepositions ('behind of the kitchen'), and missing subject-verb agreement ('toilet were'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and the reader can still understand the spatial relationships and transformations described in the diagrams.
