Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all key features of the two maps, addressing the task fully. The writer provides a clear overview in the second sentence outlining the main transformations, such as the conversion of the staff dining room into a takeaway and coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar and barbecue area, and the inclusion of outdoor seating. Details about the layout changes are accurately reported, meeting the expectations for this band. To reach a higher level, the overview could be slightly more integrated and the relationships between spatial shifts could be described with even greater precision, ensuring that minor developmental gaps are fully eliminated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The text is divided into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the before and after states. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to guide the reader through the comparison, such as 'Before the renovation' and 'After the alternation'. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Moving towards the next band requires smoother, more flexible transitional phrases between sentences and paragraphs, along with more seamless referencing of spatial features to make the flow entirely natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully conveying basic changes such as 'renovation', 'transformation', and 'serving area'. However, the vocabulary range is limited and contains noticeable lexical errors and misspellings, such as 'dinning' instead of dining, 'cinverted' instead of converted, and 'alternation' instead of alteration. There are also slight collocations issues like 'outdoor sitting' instead of outdoor seating. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision and eliminate spelling mistakes to ensure smooth communication without lexical strain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, providing some error-free sentences such as 'Before the renovation, the cafe kitchen was at the northern side...'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, featuring errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositions, including 'The following diagrams illustrates' and 'on the southern side of the the cafe', as well as tense inconsistencies ('kitchen which is remained unchanged'). These errors represent typical constraints at this level. To advance, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures, ensure consistent tense usage when describing static and changed map features, and eliminate frequent basic grammatical slips.
