Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign, fulfilling the requirement for a general overview and relevant comparisons. The overview captures key changes such as the expansion of outdoor space and the addition of a barbecue and new food stations. However, some details are slightly under-developed or imprecise, such as describing the recycling bins as having 'increased in size' when they were merely repositioned or upgraded, and describing the outdoor seating as being 'onto the left corner' rather than the south-west. Despite these minor inaccuracies in interpretation, the core trends and alterations are presented clearly, meeting the requirements for a sound, competent overview of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and supporting body paragraphs. The progression of information flows logically from the interior changes to the exterior additions. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty due to awkward transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Additionally, They added', and 'Furtherly, they also'. Referencing is generally functional, but linking devices can feel slightly forced or repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, yet tighter connections between sentences would elevate the organizational flow. The overall structure is sound enough to maintain clarity throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to map interpretation and architectural changes, such as 'blueprint', 'ambience', and 'redesign'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'barbcue options', 'replacing few places with another one', and the non-standard form 'Furtherly'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but these attempts occasionally suffer from poor collocation or incorrect word forms. Spelling slips like 'barbcue' also appear. While communication is not impeded and the range is sufficient to describe the visual information, precision and stylistic appropriateness require further refinement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures such as relative clauses and subordinate clauses. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors that place the writing at a lower band level. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues and awkward prepositions, such as 'maps represents', 'before converting into new design', 'an increasing the outer space', and 'the cafe risen up the their borders'. Articles are also misused or omitted ('looked like a simpler before', 'as a hot meals options'). While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they occur regularly and require tighter control over grammatical boundaries.
