The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I have seen the college cafe old and new design, I think so redesigned look of cafe is more practical. Kitchen is at the same place and toilet. In new design many stations are added like salad bar, outdoor seating, barbecue area, these things give more asthetic look. First their is one point from which the food is delivered and now their are all different station for take away hot meals and for coffee bar and salad bar. Their is more benefit of seating more people will come and sale of cafes will increase. First their is one entry point and now are 3 entry point. Space of bins are increased and now are recycling bins. staff dining room is removed. Takeaway point is at good location. All over it looks more practical. Every station have its own points so there will be on rush at one place. Its good at all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying several changes between the two plans, such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and the barbecue area. However, the format is closer to an informal personal opinion rather than an academic report, with statements like 'I think so redesigned look of cafe is more practical' and speculations about sales increasing. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of an overarching summary and the inclusion of subjective commentary mean the response falls short of a fully developed report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is no paragraphing used in the response, resulting in a single block of text that lacks clear overall progression. Ideas are linked together using basic connectors and repetitive phrases such as 'First their is' and 'now are', which makes the flow mechanical and disjointed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of logical structuring prevents the information from being arranged in a coherent, easy-to-follow manner appropriate for an academic task.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with frequent spelling and word-form errors, such as 'asthetic' instead of 'aesthetic', 'their' instead of 'there', and 'on rush' instead of 'no rush'. While the writer attempts some topic-specific terms like 'salad bar', 'take away', and 'recycling bins', the restricted range and noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher lexical band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are persistent mistakes with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'First their is one point from which the food is delivered and now their are all different station'. Punctuation is also sparse and sometimes faulty, and attempts at more complex formulations are consistently inaccurate, resulting in frequent errors that strain the reader.
