Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, standing at 144 words excluding prompt copy. The candidate attempts to describe the main features of the café before and after the redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and the modification of the staff dining rooms into a take-away food and coffee bar. However, the information is only partially presented, and the description lacks clarity and full development of the visual data. The overview is weak and poorly articulated, leading to a partial and somewhat disjointed coverage of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The organization of the response is extremely weak, and there is no clear overall progression or logical structure. Ideas are lumped together in long, rambling sentences and paragraphs without proper formatting. Cohesive devices are used very inadequately or inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions like 'however early year mention' and 'then move to toilets', making the text difficult to follow. Paragraphing is not used effectively to structure the comparison between the past and present layouts.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very limited and basic, with frequent word choice and spelling errors that strain the reader. Examples of inaccurate terms and word forms include 'demostrate' instead of demonstrate, 'modity' instead of modify, 'upgradation', 'recyling buins', and 'does't any kind of think'. While the candidate attempts to mention specific features from the plan like 'salad bar' and 'barbecue', the overall lexical range is inadequate for a higher band score and impedes smooth communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of faulty complex sentence attempts and severe structural errors. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, prepositions, and sentence boundaries, such as 'In cafe redesigned before onces kitchen as same as after modify then serving area subsequently redesign hot meals'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing capitalisation and run-on sentences. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning throughout the text.
