The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to the original design cafe was very basic and consisting of a kitchen, drinks, food serving area, toilets, two staff dinning rooms and tables and chairs area. There was a bin near the toilets. After redesigning the cafe, outdoor searing has been introduced along with the barbecue area. This will enhance the experience for those who want to enjoy barbeque sitting in an open space. Bin is replaced by multiple recycling bins to help contribute towards sustainability and reduce waste. A salad bar has been introduced to provide an eating opportunity for diet concious people. The combined serving area for all foods and drinks has been replaced by hot meals counter. Talking about two staff dinning rooms, one has been replaced by coffee bar while the other has been redesigned as take away food counter. Summarizing, overall seating capacity has been increased by introducing outdoor seating. A lot of new facilities are now available including salad bar and coffe bar but currently there is no separate place for staff to eat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all key features of the two diagrams, addressing the task adequately. You presented a clear overview of the main changes, such as the introduction of the outdoor seating and barbecue areas, and noted the removal of the staff dining rooms. However, some aspects tend to over-generalize or speculate slightly beyond the data, such as assuming the outdoor seating is for those who want to 'enjoy barbeque sitting in an open space' or that the salad bar is for 'diet concious people'. To reach a higher band, the reporting of spatial transformations needs to be more precise, avoiding personal speculation while maintaining a comprehensive summary of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, and you attempt to guide the reader through the comparison using transitional phrases like 'After redesigning the cafe' and 'Talking about two staff dinning rooms'. However, the progression is somewhat disrupted by a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire response is written as a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs for the introduction, body details, and overview. Additionally, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could be smoother to establish clearer logical links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic modifications made to the college cafe. You attempted less common vocabulary items such as 'sustainability', 'reduce waste', and 'outdoor seating' with reasonable success. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'dinning' instead of 'dining' and 'concious' instead of 'conscious'. Furthermore, some phrasing is overly conversational or imprecise, which prevents the writing from achieving a more precise academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles, such as 'cafe was very basic and consisting' instead of 'the cafe was very basic and consisted', and 'Bin is replaced' instead of 'The bin is replaced'. While these errors rarely impede communication, the frequent omission of necessary determiners and minor structural slips keep the grammar score at this level.
