The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The college cafe before had a smaller space as compared to the cafe today. The design of the cafe before was a little inconvenient for the workers at cafe as well as the students.
The first thing in the new design is the imoroved serving area. Different places are dedicated to different types of food. For example; before there was only one serving area for all kinds of food and drink but now that serving area is solely dedicated to hot meals because it was connected with kitchen making it easy for chefs to handover hot food to the customers.
There were two satff dining rooms before which are now converted into take away food and coffee bar.A new salad bar is also created. It creates convenience for the buyers to get whatever they want in short time without standing in a long que and also for the cafe crew to deal with customers.
A new outdoor space is also provided to the cafe today which is a nice addition. In the outdoor space a barbecue corner is made on the left corner besides salad bar. To help buyers enter this outdoor cafe area two doors are created from the dinning area. Outdoor seating is also provided for the people to enjoy weather and fresh air while eating. As the sitting area is increased, the cafe can now accomudate more customers and looking at the needs of the people the recycling bins are increased in size and given more space now.
The design of cafe today is very convenient for the ciustomers and it facilitates more as compared to the old design.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the changes made to the college cafe. The main features, such as the redesign of the kitchen area into hot meals, the replacement of staff dining rooms with a takeaway and coffee bar, and the addition of a salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area, are all highlighted and compared well against the original plan. The main features and general differences are clearly identified. However, there is a slight tendency to include personal evaluations and slight over-generalizations regarding convenience rather than purely reporting data, which keeps the response at this level. To move higher, the summary could maintain a strictly objective tone while ensuring every key spatial relationship is articulated with even greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the interior updates to the exterior additions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different thematic areas of the cafe. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'For example' and 'In the outdoor space', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences could flow more smoothly to establish tighter relationships between the ideas. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to demonstrate more sophisticated and flexible cohesive devices, ensuring that paragraph transitions and referencing are completely natural and seamless throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'serving area', 'take away food', 'coffee bar', and 'outdoor seating'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('imoroved', 'satff', 'que', 'dinning', 'accomudate', 'ciustomers') and minor word-choice slips that reflect a lack of precision. Less common lexical items are attempted, but inaccuracies in word form and spelling prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding spelling accuracy and employing more precise academic vocabulary rather than repetitive everyday phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'making it easy for chefs to handover hot food' and 'as the sitting area is increased'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including missing articles and preposition choices (e.g., 'at cafe', 'in short time', 'on the left corner besides salad bar'). However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the basic meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise better control over articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
