The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrates and compares how a college cafe looked before it was redesigned with new changes made after it was completely remodeled.
Overall, we can say that a new outdoor seating for barbecue has been set up beside the cafe, a new coffee bar along with food take away is set up.
Generally speaking, Kitchen was same as before but a new serving area has replaced the old hot meals. Staff dining rooms have been completely removed instead 2 new rooms built for take away food and coffee bar respectively.
Furthermore, a new salad bar counter is opened on the extreme left side inside the cafe, moreover the bin is replaced with a new and larger recycling bin facing the toilet entrance. New entry and exit doors are carved on either side of the walls which leads to a large open outdoor seating area with a new barbecue stall facing the seats.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview of the main changes between the two plans. You correctly identified key developments, such as the transformation of the staff dining rooms into a take-away food counter and coffee bar, the addition of the salad bar, and the introduction of the outdoor seating and barbecue area. The overview captures the general progression well. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or over-generalized, such as stating that 'a new serving area has replaced the old hot meals' (when in reality hot meals replaced the serving area). To reach a higher band, ensure greater precision in reporting spatial relationships and matching features between the two diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to specific details. You made good attempts to structure your response using general introductory phrases like 'Overall, we can say that' and cohesive transitions such as 'Furthermore' and 'moreover'. However, cohesion occasionally feels somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could be smoother. Paragraphing is present, but grouping the spatial changes into tighter, more thematic paragraphs would improve the overall flow. To elevate this criterion, work on integrating cohesive devices more naturally without relying on heavy transitional adverbs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You utilized an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map or plan, incorporating terms such as 'remodelled', 'redesigned', 'counter', and 'recycling bin'. There are, however, some lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'food take away' instead of 'take-away food' and 'carved on either side' instead of 'added' or 'opened'. While your spelling is generally accurate and communication is not impeded, the attempt at less common vocabulary is occasionally imprecise. To achieve a higher score, focus on precise collocations and natural phrasing related to architectural alterations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a basic command of structure. However, there is a persistence of grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'The plans illustrates', articles missing or misused ('a new outdoor seating for barbecue'), and awkward prepositional phrases. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to restrict your score. To move up, focus on eliminating basic agreement and article errors, and practice complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
