The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram compares the infrastructure of the cafe before and after being redesigned.

The initial layout of the cafe was arranged in such a way that everything was available in particular corners of the cafe. There was a restroom area, a dustbin, dining tables and chairs for custmoers, seperate dining area for the staff, kitchen and a serving area. It appears that there was only an option of self service.

After the redesign, it could be seen that there are multiple counters. The restroom and dustbins location has not changed. However, there is visible change in the location of the amenities in the cafe. There are now a seperate counters for take away food and dine in food which disables crowd. There is a designated coffee, salad and barbeque counters. It still appears to be self service functioning cafe. The sitting now has not just been limited to indoor, but the customers now get to choose to be seated outside.

Overall, I beleive that the redesign feel more functional than the previous one. Although the previous had the necessary requirements it was not as easily functional as the new layout. The layout is more wide spread and uses the available space to a great extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by comparing the cafe before and after the redesign, outlining the main features such as the kitchen, seating, and new counters. However, some aspects are under-developed or described in vague terms, such as mentioning multiple counters without fully detailing the transition of the staff dining rooms into the take-away food and coffee bar areas, or omitting the exact placement of the new outdoor barbecue. An overview is present towards the end, but the overall selection of features leans slightly towards generalisation rather than specific comparison of the layout's structural shifts, placing this criterion squarely at the targeted level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory statement, through body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes, to a concluding personal evaluation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'After the redesign', 'However', and 'Overall', which help guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the analysis. While referencing is generally clear, the transition between ideas occasionally feels a bit mechanical, pointing towards the characteristics of a half band where clear logical organization is evident throughout, but some cohesive links lack seamless flexibility.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'amenities', and 'designated'. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'custmoers' (customers), 'seperate' (separate), 'sitting' used instead of 'seating', and the awkward phrase 'disables crowd'. These inaccuracies do not impede communication, as the general meaning remains clear, but they highlight the limitations typical of this band level where precision and control over spelling and collocations are inconsistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'The initial layout of the cafe was arranged in such a way that everything was available...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a self service functioning cafe', 'the redesign feel more functional') and subject-verb agreement issues ('the redesign feel'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple structures are controlled effectively, aligning with the expected profile of mixed simple and complex forms containing occasional non-systemic mistakes.
