Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign. Key changes such as the addition of the salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating are mentioned, meeting the requirements of this level. However, some areas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the transition from staff dining rooms to a takeaway food and coffee bar is phrased awkwardly as 'top of the north staff dinning rooms situated'. While an overall trend is identified, the description would benefit from a more thorough comparison of spatial reorganisation to move to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, past layout, and present layout. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and faulty. Phrases like 'The cafe before redesign it was have' and 'At the present, cafe is served' disrupt the logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the use of cohesive devices is basic rather than flexible. To improve, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs using more natural conjunctive ties and better referencing pronouns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas about the maps, but it remains limited and contains frequent word choice and spelling errors that show an incomplete control of lexical features. Examples include 'devlopment', 'coffe bar', 'eastnside', and 'facalities'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'redesign', 'barbecue', and 'recycled' (implied via recycling bins), but word formation and collocation errors, such as 'fooding facalities' and 'The big changed', impede precision and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing displays a limited mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but it is heavily impacted by frequent grammatical errors. There are notable issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'before how it is looked', 'cafe before redesign it was have', and 'barbecue which is located'. Article usage is also inconsistent throughout the text, as seen in 'on north west corner'. While these errors rarely completely obscure the overall meaning, their frequency across simple and attempted complex structures keeps the score at this level.
