Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by outlining the main changes between the college cafe before and after the redesign. It covers key features such as the kitchen, the new food stations like the salad bar and coffee bar, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, some aspects are under-developed or lack clarity, such as the confusion regarding entrances and exits compared to the actual plan. While an overview is attempted, it is partially integrated rather than standing out clearly as a summary of main trends, placing this aspect firmly within the expectations for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable beginning and end, attempting to group related features together. However, progression is sometimes faulty and mechanical. The text lacks adequate paragraphing, being condensed into dense blocks that make logical transitions harder to follow. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'however' and 'while' without proper punctuation or precise structural control, leading to run-on sentences and unclear referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, attempting less common items such as 'transform version', 'cabin', and 'redesign'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to service counters as a 'cabin' instead of an area or counter, and spelling errors like 'salad baar' and 'dinning'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede overall communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors regarding subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as 'The graph illustrate', 'foods was served', and 'from the previous has replaced to recycling bin'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing periods and commas leading to run-on sentences like 'The new design is the transform version of the old one. In the old cafe all the foods...'. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though meaning is still generally conveyed.
