Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, while making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the general transformation accurately, noting what remained unchanged and what was altered or added, such as the new exterior seating and updated interior zones. Key features like the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a take-away food area and coffee bar, the addition of the salad bar, and the outdoor barbecue and seating areas are all clearly reported. While the description is comprehensive and meets the requirements well, the development of some details could be slightly more precise in terms of exact spatial relationships to reach the highest standard. Overall, the information is well-selected and effectively communicated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing the specific changes to the interior and exterior of the cafe. There is a clear overall progression from the starting state to the present layout. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'however', 'Furthermore', and 'Likewise' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the facility, such as the interior changes and the outdoor additions. To achieve a higher band, the referencing between sentences could be smoother to ensure a more seamless flow of information throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey the main features and changes of the maps. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'transformation', 'reconstructed', and 'upgraded', but these are accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and word form errors, such as 'tabels' instead of 'tables', 'an additional facilities' instead of 'additional facilities', and 'Modern building like salad bar' instead of a facility or counter. Spelling errors like 'tabels' and grammar-adjacent word choices occasionally detract from precision, though communication is not impeded. To improve, the student should focus on precise word formation, correct spelling, and more natural collocations when describing architectural features and functional areas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative statements. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'The plans illustrates' instead of 'illustrate', 'there has being a serious transformation' instead of 'there has been', and 'Two section that was formerly occupied... was converted' where agreement fails. Punctuation and article usage also show persistent flaws, such as missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'coffee bar' or 'salad bar'. These errors reflect a lack of consistent control over complex grammatical patterns, meaning that while meaning remains clear, accuracy needs to be significantly enhanced to reach a higher level.
