Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying some of the main changes between the two plans, such as the introduction of a salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. However, the explanation is limited and lacks precision, containing inaccurate statements such as the claim that the cafeteria has made no change or that staff dining rooms were exchanged with a coffee bar when the plans clearly show both a take-away food area and a coffee bar replacing the old staff rooms. The overview is overly simplistic and misses several key spatial transformations, keeping the task response at a restricted level where ideas are under-developed and lack clear support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting to group information into introductory, body, and concluding sections, but there is a lack of clear progression throughout. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the mechanical and repetitive transitions ('Moreover', 'also', 'whereas'), and referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed, preventing a smooth and coherent reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices such as 'restructured', 'coffe bar', 'dinning', and informal phrasing like 'gorgeious'. There are frequent spelling mistakes and word-form inaccuracies that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'sum of new options' instead of 'some new options'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these attempts lack precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of sentence structures with frequent grammatical errors. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty, as seen in the opening clause 'The diagram illustrates that college cafe before and after restructured and how it seen then.' There are persistent errors in verb forms, articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'cafeteria's has made', 'There is no change take place', 'Now the is looking'), which cause frequent strain for the reader and reflect limited control over grammatical accuracy.
