Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by comparing the past and present layouts of the college cafe, identifying key transformations such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the alteration of the staff rooms. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum at 125 words. Furthermore, certain features are only partially developed or under-examined, such as the precise locations of the new facilities, keeping the task achievement at a moderate level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the introductory statement, the body paragraph detailing specific spatial changes, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall' and 'However', though referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive (e.g., jumping between various sections of the cafe). Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping ideas more logically would improve the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'infrastructure', 'serving area', and 're-designed'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, alongside minor word-choice slips such as 'map' instead of 'plans' or 'plan of college cafe'. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the spatial descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The map compares the plan of college cafe in the past and plan of redesigned cafe in the present.' There are frequent errors in grammar, including missing articles ('the' plan, 'in the past'), incorrect prepositions ('in the left side' instead of 'on'), and pluralisation issues. While these errors are noticeable and affect the control of complex structures, they rarely impede overall communication.
