The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan describes the old cafe map and the present map after redesigning of a college.

Overall, there are multiple changes in the new cafe design. The new format has added some new areas in the cafe while some areas from the past have been replaced and some areas have modified as well.

The staff dining rooms from the former design have been replaced by the take away food and the coffee bar whereas serving area is now only restricted to hot food. The new cafe map has added a salad bar and a outdoor barbecue setup, in addition to which, their is also outdoor seating now which was absent in the old design.

In the older setting their was only one entrance besides the bins, whereas, the new setting have added two more single doors in the dinning hall which opens into the outdoor seating area. The kitchen, toilets and bins are still in the same place as in the old map.

Notably, the new design came up with some modifications and upgradation of the cafe as compared to the old one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. You cover key alterations, such as the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a take away food section and coffee bar, the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. Your overview captures the general sense of multiple changes. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or general, such as the description of the kitchen and toilets remaining in the same place without adding further specific comparative detail. To reach a higher level, you could provide a more fully extended description of all spatial relationships and ensure every major area is thoroughly contrasted between the two time frames.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory paragraph, a body exploring specific spatial changes, and a concluding summary sentence. You use some cohesive devices and logical links like 'whereas', 'in addition to which', and 'whereas serving area' to connect ideas. However, the progression between sentences can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. Referencing is mostly clear, though paragraphing is somewhat brief and could be better managed to group related changes logically, such as separating indoor structural shifts from outdoor additions. Enhancing the flexibility and subtlety of cohesive devices would improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to architectural and spatial descriptions such as 'redesigned', 'format', 'restricted', and 'modifications'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but also noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'map' instead of 'plan', 'some areas from the past have been replaced and some areas have modified as well' (where 'modified' lacks the correct passive voice), and 'hot food' instead of 'hot meals'. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control needs greater precision and awareness of collocation to achieve higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and contrasting structures, such as in the sentence beginning with 'The staff dining rooms from the former design...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including missing articles ('their is also outdoor seating', 'in the older setting their was only one entrance'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the new setting have added'), and incorrect prepositions or passive voice omissions ('some areas have modified'). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, their presence places the grammar securely in the middle range.
