The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan ellaborates a college cafe before and after redesigning.

Overall, the cafe undergoes several developmental changes. There is addition of many different sections.

Serving area for all food and drinks is now replaced by hot meals only. Staff dining area is removed and there is addition of take away food and coffee bar sections. On left side of the cafe now salad bar is introduced.Previously there is only single bin but now in modern cafe there are number of recycling bins. Location of the toilets is same in both plans.

Interestingly, a major change is addition of outdoor seating.Access to outdoor area is through two doors, on both bottom corners. In out door setting there are three tables with six chairs along each and two tables with four chair along each.At the left of outdoor dinning area there is addition of barbecue section.

New cafe has easy access to everything and is quite bigger.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes, including the replacement of the general serving area with a hot-meals counter, the removal of staff dining rooms, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. Most reported features match the plans, and you correctly note that the toilets remain in the same location. The outdoor seating description, however, misreports the furniture: the plan shows four rectangular tables, not five tables with the stated chair counts. The final claims that the café is “quite bigger” and offers “easy access to everything” are broad conclusions not clearly established by the plan. For a stronger response, prioritise precise spatial comparisons and avoid unsupported evaluations while retaining your useful overview of the redesign.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and details about the internal changes followed by the outdoor area. This makes the main progression understandable. However, several details are compressed into one long sequence, particularly the sentences beginning “Serving area for all food and drinks” and “Staff dining area is removed,” so the relationships between changes are not always easy to follow. The transitions “Interestingly” and “Previously” help, but the paragraphing and linking are somewhat mechanical. Group the internal changes together and give the outdoor additions a separate, clearly developed paragraph. Also use more precise references to locations so readers can follow the plan without relying on general phrases such as “on left side.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “replaced,” “introduced,” “recycling bins,” “access,” and “outdoor seating.” This gives you enough range to communicate the main changes, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “developmental changes,” “there is addition,” and “out door setting.” “Staff dining area” and “staff dining rooms” also need consistent, accurate naming. Spelling and word-form slips, including “ellaborates” and “dinning,” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for concise, conventional map-description phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make your descriptions more precise and natural without requiring unnecessarily advanced words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including the contrast in “Serving area … is now replaced by hot meals only” and the longer sentence describing access to the outdoor area. The meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The plan ellaborates a college cafe” uses an unsuitable verb pattern, while “Previously there is only single bin” has problems with tense, article use, and number. The sentence “Staff dining area is removed and there is addition…” also needs clearer article use and more controlled clause construction. Use past tense for the former plan and present tense for the current one, and practise accurate articles and plural forms. Breaking long sequences into complete, well-punctuated sentences would improve control.
