The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagrams compares the design a college cafe before and after its restructuring.
Overall, cafe has expanded its dining area acuumulating outside space as its new outdoor seating arrangement. Alongside, the entrances and exits as well as the food stations have been increased.
Towards the northern area, the former space for all types of food and drink serving area is now replaced with a hot-meals-only station while the kitchen still occupies its original area. Parallel to these, along the northern edge, the two staff dining rooms are now transformed into a take away counter and a coffee bar. The eastern side of the cafe has also gone through improvements in terms of services as there is a new entrance and an exit whereas an outdoor dining area is the latest addition to the eating space of the cafe.
In addition, on the eastern side, a new salad bar inside, and a Barbecue station outside of the cafe has been opened. On the opposite side, the conventional bin is changed into a recycling bin. The central area for tables and chairs, and the toilets remained the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the café gains outdoor seating, while the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain. You also report several specific changes, including the hot-meals counter, the two new northern services, the salad bar, and recycling bins. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers much of the plan. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the new entrance and exit are not on the eastern side; two doors were added on the southern wall to access the outdoor seating. The barbecue is south-west of the building, not simply on the eastern side, and the salad bar is inside along the western wall. More precise location reporting and a clearer account of the southern additions would make the coverage more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape, moving from an overview to descriptions of the northern area and then other features. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Towards the northern area,” and “In addition” help signal progression, and the final sentence effectively groups the unchanged features. Some connections, however, are mechanical or confusing. “Parallel to these” does not clearly explain the relationship between the kitchen counter and the former staff rooms, while “On the opposite side” is difficult to follow because the preceding locations are not consistently established. The paragraphing also leaves several distinct changes crowded together. Organise the details by location—north, west/east, then south—and use clearer references to make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “transformed,” “occupies,” “recycling bin,” and “outdoor seating arrangement.” These choices show an attempt to vary language beyond simply repeating “changed.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “acuumulating outside space,” “food stations have been increased,” and “a Barbecue station … has been opened.” “Entrances and exits” also suggests more access points than the plan clearly shows. There is a spelling error in “acuumulating,” and “hot-meals-only station” is less natural than a direct label such as “hot-meals counter.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural collocations rather than elaborate phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “while” and “whereas,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “The central area for tables and chairs, and the toilets remained the same.” However, there are several grammatical slips. “The diagrams compares” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Overall, cafe has expanded” needs an article. In “a new salad bar inside, and a Barbecue station outside … has been opened,” the subject is plural, so the verb form does not agree; the sentence also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Review agreement, articles, and sentence construction, especially when combining multiple changes in one sentence. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
