Student answer (Band 6.5)

The design compares the layout of a cafe in college and represents how it looked before revamping and how it looks as of today.

Overall, the cafe has undergone some major redevelopments including the outdoor seating arrangement, the take away food area and a coffee bar spot. However the toilets, kitchen and inner seating area remained same at their positions.

The cafe before redesigning had a kitchen along with a serving area for all kinds of food and beverages. On the immediate right of the kitchen there were staff dinning rooms facing to an inner seating area with tables and chairs at the middle of the cafe and at the bottom right of the cafe there were toilets and next to them was a small bin.

As of now, A significant change is addition of a outdoor seating area along with a barbeque section at the bottom left of the cafe. The serving area along the kitchen is turned to a hot meals section, staff dining rooms are replaced by two spots which are now reserved for take away and coffee bar. The bins next to toilets are now converted to bigger recycling bins and on the far opposite of it, a salad bar is developed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation and provide a clear overview: outdoor seating, takeaway and coffee facilities are new, while the kitchen, toilets and central seating remain. Most comparisons are grounded in the plans, including the change from a general serving area to hot meals and the replacement of staff dining rooms. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: the new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are omitted, and the salad bar is described as being opposite the bins rather than along the western wall. The claim that the recycling bins are “bigger” is not shown in the plans. More precise coverage of these features would make the summary more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction, an overview, then details of the former and current layouts. This gives the reader a clear overall comparison, and phrases such as “Overall” and “As of now” help signal the stages. However, the final paragraph combines several changes in one long sentence, making the relationships between them less easy to follow. Some location references are also imprecise: “on the immediate right” and “far opposite of it” do not clearly establish the features’ positions. Use shorter, more controlled sentences and explicit directional links, such as “along the western wall” or “on the south side,” to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “redevelopments,” “replaced,” “converted” and “addition.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for a plan description: “coffee bar spot,” “staff dinning rooms,” “at their positions,” and “far opposite of it.” There are also spelling errors in “dinning” and “barbeque,” and “revamping” is less suitable than a neutral term such as “redesign.” Aim for precise spatial vocabulary and natural collocations, for example “located beside,” “along the western wall” and “outdoor dining area.” This would make the description more accurate and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview contrast between new facilities and features that “remained” in place. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “a outdoor seating area” needs the article “an,” while “the toilets, kitchen and inner seating area remained same” needs “remained in the same positions.” Capitalisation after a comma is also incorrect in “As of now, A significant change.” The long sentence beginning “The cafe before redesigning had…” contains several linked clauses and would be clearer if divided. Continue using varied structures, while checking articles, sentence boundaries, and agreement in longer descriptions.
