The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan illustrate the changes of a cafe to a new redesigned look compared to its prior design.

Overall, the cafe today has a more modernised look with an introduction of outdoor seating to accomodate even more customers. Additional ameneties have been added to ensure a more processed workflow.

The old cafe had a kitchen with a serving area for all kinds of food and drinks. There are two staff dining rooms, and a big lounge for tables and chairs. At the south-east, there is a toilet area and next to it, and a bin area for trash to dispose.

The redesigned cafe has a kitchen that only serves hot meals. A salad bar has been introduced in the west. A take away area and a coffee bar replaced the staff dining rooms, while the bins were replaced with recycling bins.

The outdoor seating was introduced with a barbecue area for additional main course meals. There are several chairs and tables with different seating limits. The outdoor's entrance is located at the southwest in the cafe with an exit towards the southeast, near the toilet area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main changes and provide a clear overview: the café gains outdoor seating, while the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities. You also accurately mention the salad bar, hot-meal counter and recycling bins. This meets the task well, with some detail still less fully reported. For example, the outdoor area is described, but the four tables and the barbecue’s position immediately southwest of the building are not clearly specified. The final sentence also misreads the plan: the two new doors are on the southern wall, not an entrance at the southwest and an exit near the toilets. Avoid adding unsupported details such as “different seating limits” and “additional main course meals”; precise locations and visible features would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the former layout and the redesigned café. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and transitions such as “while” help connect changes. However, some linking is awkward or repetitive. In “At the south-east, there is a toilet area and next to it, and a bin area,” the relationship between the toilet and bin is difficult to follow, and the bin is not next to the toilets in the plan. The final paragraph shifts from outdoor features to door locations without a clear organising principle. Grouping changes by area—interior first, then the southern outdoor extension—and using clearer references would make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” “salad bar” and “recycling bins.” There is some range in describing change, particularly “introduced” and “replaced.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “big lounge” is not the plan’s label, “processed workflow” is vague, and “different seating limits” does not clearly describe the tables and chairs shown. Spelling errors in “accomodate” and “ameneties” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, neutral terms that report visible features rather than infer their purpose, and check spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more consistently appropriate and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and some more developed structures, such as “A take away area and a coffee bar replaced the staff dining rooms, while the bins were replaced with recycling bins.” Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening “The plan illustrate” has a subject–verb agreement error; it should be “The plan illustrates” or “The plans illustrate.” In “At the south-east, there is a toilet area and next to it, and a bin area,” the sentence structure breaks down, while “The outdoor’s entrance” uses an incorrect possessive construction. Review agreement, sentence boundaries and how to express locations. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing the clear basic meaning.
