Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan illustrates the changes that have been made in the cafe of a college, comparing its original layout with its current design.

Overall, the cafe has been considerably modernised by adding several facilities, including a takeaway food area, coffee bar, salad bar, barbecue and sitting area outside the cafe. At the same time staff dining have been removed and original serving area has been replaced.

Previously, the kitchen occupied the upper left area of the cafe with the serving area immediately down for all foods and drinks. The main dining area, contains two staff dining rooms at lkeft of the kitchen, tables and chair were placed in the cxenter of the hall.In addition toilet was installed at the lower right side of the hall.

Following the redsesigne, the kitchen remains at the upper left corner but a hot meal section has been added. The former serving area has been modified, while the salad bar has been added at the left side of main hall. The two roomms of dining have been replace by takeaway food and coffee bar. A recycling bin has also been added at the right side.

Another most important ammendment which has been made was the addition of sitting arrangemant outside the cafe with several chairs and tables at the bottom with the additional facility of having barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear overview of the main changes, noting that the staff dining rooms were removed and that new food facilities and outdoor seating were added. Most details match the plans: the kitchen remains in the upper-left, the toilets stay in the lower-right, and the former bin becomes recycling bins. This covers the task well and shows some of the broader comparison expected at a stronger level. However, a few details are unclear or imprecise: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not “at left of the kitchen,” and the hot-meal counter replaces the former serving area rather than being an additional section. You also omit the two new southern doors and the four outdoor tables. More precise positioning and fuller coverage of these changes would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a sensible overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the earlier and current layouts. Time markers such as “Previously” and “Following the redesign” help readers follow the comparison, and the final paragraph gives the outdoor changes a clear place in the account. Cohesion is sometimes weakened by awkward links and unclear references, however. For example, “The former serving area has been modified” does not specify how, while “Another most important amendment” is an unnatural transition and repeats the idea of change. Some sentences also run together, as in “the hall.In addition toilet…”. Use clearer links between related features, maintain consistent paragraphing and punctuation, and make each reference explicit to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of layout vocabulary, including “upper left corner,” “main hall,” “recycling bin,” and “addition,” so the reader can generally understand the changes. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “considerably modernised” and “former serving area.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “redsesigne,” “ammendment,” and “sitting arrangemant.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural: “sitting area outside” and “hot meal section” could describe the plan more accurately as outdoor seating and a hot-meals counter. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and use the plan’s labels where they provide the clearest description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “At the same time.” The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “staff dining have been removed” needs a clearer noun phrase and agreement, while “The main dining area, contains” has an unnecessary comma. In “tables and chair were placed,” the plural subject requires a plural verb, and “In addition toilet was installed” needs an article and clearer sentence punctuation. There are also inconsistent spaces and missing spaces after full stops. Check articles, subject–verb agreement, plurals, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
