The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two figures illustrate the difference in architectural design of a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks after the remodelling of it.

Overall, the café was significantly reorganised, particularly in terms of the food-serving and dining areas. While the kitchen, toilets and bins remained unchanged, several new facilities were introduced and the staff dining rooms were removed. Salad is a ready to serve meal so it is good that it is placed near the dining area and is accessible quickly for everyone. Meanwhile a very thoughtful decision to shift barbecue to outdoors so that it doesn't affect the internal atmosphere of the cafe with smoke and grilling sound.

Morever the coffee bar was separated from the main serving area and given its own designated space. A separate takeaway area was also added near the food-serving section.

However we had staff dining rooms before the redesign which are now missing in the newest version which I think should have been accomodated in the indoor dining area as we have outdoor seeting too so lack of seating wouldn't have become a problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the removal of the staff dining rooms, the addition of a salad bar and takeaway area, and the move of the barbecue outdoors. Your overview also notes that the kitchen and toilets remain. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bins were replaced by recycling bins rather than remaining unchanged, and the coffee bar was not simply separated from a main serving area; it occupies part of the former staff-room space. The response also shifts into personal opinions and recommendations, such as saying the salad bar is a good choice and staff rooms should have been accommodated. For a stronger report, describe the layout objectively and include key changes such as the new southern doors and outdoor seating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes and offering a final comment. Linking words such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is uneven because the overview mixes factual comparison with personal evaluation, and the final paragraph moves from describing the plans to recommending what the designers should have done. “Morever” introduces a point that is not clearly connected to the preceding barbecue comment, while “Meanwhile” does not express a clear contrast there. Group the changes by location or by what was removed and added, and use transitions that accurately show those relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing redesign, including “reorganised,” “designated space,” “accessible,” and “outdoor.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the response attempts some less common phrasing. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise: “difference in architectural design” is less direct than describing changes to the layout, and “separated from the main serving area” misrepresents the plan. There are also spelling errors in “Morever,” “accomodated,” and “seeting.” Prefer precise, neutral terms for map features and check spelling carefully; avoid evaluative phrases such as “very thoughtful decision,” which are not suitable for an objective report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While the kitchen…” and a relative clause in “which I think should have been accommodated.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices reduce accuracy. In “before it was redesigned and how it looks after the remodelling of it,” the parallel structure is awkward; “before and after its redesign” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “Meanwhile a very thoughtful decision…” is a fragment because it lacks a main verb. In the final sentence, “as we have outdoor seating too so…” combines two linking structures unnecessarily. Aim for complete sentences and simpler, well-controlled comparisons.
