Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response recognises that the plans compare the café before and after changes, and it names several relevant features, including the serving area, staff dining rooms, hot meals and salad bar. However, it does not summarise the main changes or give a clear overview of what has been redesigned. Important features such as the new takeaway and coffee-bar sections, recycling bins, outdoor seating and barbecue are not reported, and the brief statement that the café is “quietly renew” does not explain the transformation. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving too little space to select and describe the key comparisons. To improve, organise the main changes into a concise overview and supporting details about the interior and new outdoor area.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to introduce the plans and indicate a comparison through “In previous time and nowdays”. The response also groups several changed features in one sentence, so the reader can identify its general subject. However, the ideas are not developed into a clear sequence: there is no separate overview or organised description of the former and current layouts. The list-like phrase “serving, staff dinning rooms, hot meals salad bar” does not show how these features relate to one another, and the ellipsis leaves the thought unfinished. Use a short introduction, an overview of the main transformation, and one or two paragraphs comparing specific areas. Linking phrases such as “Previously” and “In the redesigned café” would make the progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response attempts some task-related vocabulary, including “college cafe”, “serving”, “staff dining rooms”, “hot meals” and “salad bar”. These terms show awareness of the plan’s subject, and “considerable” suggests an effort to use a less basic adjective. However, several choices are inaccurate or unclear: “modulation” does not describe a café redesign, “quietly renew” is not a natural way to describe the changes, and “whole view” is awkward in this context. Spelling and word-form errors, including “dinning” and “caffe”, also reduce precision. Build a reliable set of words for describing layouts and changes, such as “redesigned”, “replaced”, “added” and “remained unchanged”, and use the labels from the plan accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response contains a few simple sentence attempts, including “The map illustrates…” and “Some areas of cafeteria are changed”, but it shows little variety in sentence structure. Errors in articles and sentence construction make the meaning less clear: “illustrates whole view” needs an article and a more complete phrase, while “Some areas of cafeteria are changed” does not use a suitable tense for describing a completed redesign. The final sentence, “In previous time and nowdays, the picture of caffe is quietly renew”, has problems with tense, verb form and sentence structure. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and a colon introducing an incomplete list. Practise past-tense descriptions of former layouts and present-tense descriptions of the current plan, using complete, clearly punctuated sentences.
