The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illutrates how a college cafe was redesigned and how it looks in present time.
Overall, the cafe experienced significant development, with salad bar added in the Tables and chairs area and secondly, outdoor seating is also a new thing which was absent in the past and several other small changes also happened.
Now, Table and chairs area is efficiently used by adding additional feature like salaad bar and also by converting the staff dining rooms into Take away food and Coffee bar.Lastly, Recycling bins are also modified in this specific area.Toilets size remained the same
The other notable feature is the addition of outdoor seating for barbecue which was not there but now it occupies a considerable area.Kitchen area is the same but in the past in south west area of the Kitchen was Serving area which served all types of food and drink and now this area is just for the serving of Hot meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, a salad bar is added, and outdoor seating appears. You also note that the kitchen and toilets remain, and distinguish the former all-food-and-drink serving area from the hot-meals counter. These relevant comparisons support a clear overall account. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the salad bar is along the western wall, not in the tables-and-chairs area, and the recycling bins replace the bin rather than being “modified.” The outdoor area includes seating and a barbecue; describing it as “for barbecue” and saying it occupies a considerable area is imprecise. More precise coverage of the new southern doors and the outdoor tables would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the interior and outdoor changes. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “The other notable feature” help signal the stages of the description. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph combines the overview with several specific changes, and the next paragraph repeats some of these points. Connectors such as “and secondly” and “Lastly” feel mechanical, while “this specific area” has an unclear reference. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by clearly grouped comparisons—for example, changes inside the café, then the new outdoor area—and use location-based references to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “redesigned,” “staff dining rooms,” “Recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating,” so the main features can generally be understood. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “significant development” and “considerable area.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “in present time,” “additional feature,” “modified” for the bins, and “for barbecue” do not describe the plan naturally. Spelling errors such as “illutrates” and “salaad” are noticeable, and capitalisation of labels is inconsistent. Aim for precise map language such as “was replaced by,” “was added along the western wall,” and “an outdoor dining area with a barbecue.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast between the former serving area and the current hot-meals counter. The main message is usually recoverable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors make the description less controlled. For example, “Overall, the cafe” needs a space after the comma, and “with salad bar added” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “Now, Table and chairs area…” has awkward sentence construction and unclear coordination, while “Toilets size remained the same” needs a possessive form. Tense and article use also need attention when comparing past and present layouts. Use complete, clearly punctuated sentences and check articles, possessives, and consistent past-versus-present forms.
