The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan depits a comparison of a college cafe before and after the design phase.
The modified cafe plan shows a number of seating arrangment for the outdoor barbecue activity which was not previously provided. Two doors have been added in the long side wall of the cafe to utilize the outer space. In the past the kithcen had a Service area for a variety of foods and drinks which is converted to hot meals in the newest plan.
Before designing, the cafe had two staff dinning rooms which have been converted into take away food and a cafe bar in the new layout. There has been no modification in toilets area while the space for recyling bins (trash) has been almost doubled in reinvented cafe. A new salad bar space is also been introduced in the inner side of the cafe near tables and chairs.
Overall, the cafe after design has more seating availibilty inside as well as outside and it has more dinning options than the old design.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change from staff dining rooms to takeaway and coffee facilities, note the new outdoor seating and barbecue, and compare the kitchen counter’s function. The overview also captures the broader shift towards more dining options. These relevant points support a response that addresses the task well. However, some details are unclear or not fully accurate: the plan shows four outdoor tables, but the response does not describe them, and “the space for recycling bins … has been almost doubled” is not supported by the plans, which show the bins replacing the single bin in the same general position. The claim of more seating inside is also not clearly demonstrated. More precise reporting of the layout would strengthen the overview and extend the comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the comparison, describes several changes, and ends with a summary. The sequence from outdoor changes to the kitchen and then the former staff rooms is generally easy to follow. Paragraphing helps separate the overview from supporting details. However, links between features are sometimes abrupt, and the final paragraph repeats broad points rather than drawing together the most important changes. Phrases such as “In the past” and “Before designing” serve similar functions, while “which” in the kitchen sentence makes the relationship between the serving area and hot meals less direct. Grouping changes by location or by what was replaced, and using clearer references, would make progression more consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “staff dining rooms,” “hot meals,” “salad bar,” and “outdoor seating,” so the reader can understand most of the changes. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “converted” and “introduced.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “depits,” “arrangment,” “kithcen,” “dinning,” and “recyling.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “barbecue activity” does not describe the mapped facility, “cafe bar” is less exact than “coffee bar,” and “seating availability” is awkward in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and use the plan’s labels where they provide the clearest description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including relative clauses and passive constructions, as in “which are converted to hot meals” and “which have been converted into take away food.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “The modified cafe plan shows a number of seating arrangment,” the singular phrase needs a plural noun and a suitable determiner. “A new salad bar space is also been introduced” combines verb forms incorrectly; use “has also been introduced.” Tense and article choices also need attention in “Before designing” and “in the newest plan.” Check subject–verb patterns and keep past descriptions and present-day features clearly distinguished.
