The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pictures illustrates the comparison of the outlines of a college cafe which shows the designs of before and after look of the cafe.
Cafe before redesign had a kitchen with a serving area where all food and drinks were served. There were two staff dining rooms in a large rectangular area with toilets at the bottom east corner and a across from it. Moreover, the space had tables and chairs available in the middlle of the large space.
However, after redesigning the cafe , it still has the same kitchen space with same size that now serves hot meals only beside the east side of the door. The two staff dining rooms has been replaced with a food take away room and a coffee bar respectively. The toilets and the tables and chairs are still in the same space while the bins are now replaced with recycling bins which is also in the same place but it occupies more space now. Additionally, in the west side of the large space there is a salad bar available as well. Along with that the cafe has now extended and opened a Barbecue space in the outdoor with speacial seating arrangement .
To sum it all, the redesigned cafe overs more features available to the college students with an extended outdoor seating .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes accurately: the kitchen remains, the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, the toilets and central seating stay in place, and recycling bins replace the single bin. You also mention the new salad bar and outdoor seating with a barbecue, so the main transformation is recognisable. However, some details are unclear or unsupported: “a across from it” does not identify what is opposite the toilets, and the response does not explain that new doors lead from the café to the outdoor seating. The overview that the redesign “offers more features” is relevant but broad. A clearer summary of the main pattern—retained facilities alongside new food services and an expanded outdoor area—would make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: it first describes the former layout, then the redesigned café, and ends with a brief summary. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Additionally,” and “To sum it all” help signal these stages. The organisation is therefore coherent, although some connections feel mechanical and the first paragraph’s details are not always easy to follow. For example, “toilets at the bottom east corner and a across from it” leaves the second location unclear, while several changes are packed into one long paragraph. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the two layouts, and group related changes by location or function. This would improve progression and make comparisons easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant layout vocabulary, including “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” “recycling bins,” “salad bar,” and “outdoor seating,” which allows you to report the main features. There is some variety in how you describe change, such as “replaced” and “extended.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, including “outlines,” “before and after look,” “food take away room,” and “opened a Barbecue space in the outdoor.” Spelling slips such as “middlle” and “speacial” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional map language and check spelling: for example, describe facilities as being “converted into” or “added,” and refer to “an outdoor barbecue area.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “However” and an addition with “Additionally.” Most of the layout information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “The pictures illustrates,” and “The two staff dining rooms has been replaced” also needs plural agreement. Articles and sentence construction are problematic in “with toilets at the bottom east corner and a across from it,” while “with same size” is missing an article. There are also punctuation and spacing slips around commas. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence. More accurate control of these forms would make your comparisons clearer.
