The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the renovation of the old and out dated cafe to a modern one, with better space utilzation and many new departments added to it.

Overall, before the redesign, the cafe had unutilized space, with one main kitchen area and a single serving area for all kinds of foods and drinks. The staff dining rooms took most of the space and the table and chairs were present in the middle of the cafe. However, the new cafe has a better seating space with remarkable management.

If we look deeply, the serving area is replaced by a hot meal section. A salad bar is added at the left side of the cafe. Staff dining rooms are replaced by a takeaway food section and a coffee bar. The tables and chairs, however, remain in the middle as they were before. An outdorr seating is also added to the new setup to increase space for sitting, with a barbeque section at the left. The normal bins are replaced by recycling bins and the toilets remain at the same place as they were before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main changes and give an overview contrasting the former layout with the improved facilities in the redesigned café. The response accurately notes the hot-meal counter, the new salad bar, the replacement of staff dining rooms by takeaway and coffee areas, and the recycling bins and unchanged toilets. You also mention outdoor seating and the barbecue. This meets the task well, with some evidence of the fuller comparison expected at a stronger level. However, the overview is partly unclear: “the staff dining rooms took most of the space” is not supported by the plan, and “better seating space with remarkable management” is vague. You could make the overview more precise by highlighting the new outdoor area and the changes to the service facilities, while avoiding unsupported evaluations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph describing the changes. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “If we look deeply” help signal the stages of the description, and the reader can generally follow the comparison. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, though, and the final paragraph presents several changes in a list-like sequence. Some references are also imprecise: “the left side” and “at the left” would be clearer as “the western side” and “south-west of the building.” Consider grouping changes by location or function, and use more precise referencing so that each feature’s position is easy to understand.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “replaced,” “added,” “remain,” and “recycling bins.” These choices communicate most of the changes clearly. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or informal for an IELTS plan description: “better space utilzation,” “remarkable management,” and “if we look deeply” do not express the layout changes naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “out dated,” “utilzation,” “outdorr,” and “barbeque.” Aim for accurate, conventional terms for locations and facilities, and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary would make the description clearer without needing evaluative phrases such as “remarkable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “The tables and chairs, however, remain in the middle as they were before.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some structures are less controlled, however. In “An outdorr seating is also added,” the article and noun construction are incorrect; write “An outdoor seating area has also been added.” The opening phrase “the renovation of the old and out dated cafe to a modern one” is also awkwardly constructed, and “the table and chairs were present” has a number mismatch. Continue practising articles, plural agreement, and accurate passive forms when describing changes.
