Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map charts illustrate the cafetria of a college before and after its redesigning.
Overall, some areas like kitchen, toilets, and tables and chairs remained stable. While some new places emerged as salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating area, as well as staff dining rooms replaced to take away food and coffee bar.
Firstly, the cafetria of college renovated, the most striking difference is the emergence of salad bar on the west side of the map, a barbecue area on the south corner, and some seating areas outside of the door also emerged. While the area of indoor tables and chairs remaind unchanged, although in this area salad bar amerged and the bin area expanded and ned as recycle bin.
Furthermore, the serving area of food and drinks converted into hot meals, along with this the staff dining rooms changed into take away food and coffee bar. The enterance remained at the same location on the north-east corner. Another enterance on the south corner close to the barbecure

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall changes: the kitchen, toilets and central seating remain, while a salad bar and outdoor facilities are added and the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas. You also report the conversion of the serving counter to hot meals. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the key before-and-after comparison. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the recycling bins did not expand the seating area, and the new southern doors lead to outdoor seating; the barbecue is outside to the south-west, not simply at the “south corner.” The entrance is on the north-east wall, but describing it as unchanged is not fully supported because the plans show new southern access as well. More precise location reporting would strengthen the account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by two paragraphs describing changes, and sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. The main comparisons are generally grouped sensibly. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and several links between ideas are unclear. For example, “While the area of indoor tables and chairs remained unchanged, although…” combines two contrasting linkers, while the sentence about the bin and recycling area is difficult to follow. The final paragraph also ends abruptly, leaving the description of the new southern entrance and outdoor area incomplete. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each feature to its location and corresponding change.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “remained,” “converted,” “replaced,” and directional terms such as “west side” and “north-east corner.” These choices show an adequate range for describing a redesign. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “cafetria,” “remaind,” “enterance,” and “barbecure,” and some phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “some new places emerged” and “the bin area expanded and ned as recycle bin.” These errors sometimes make the intended change harder to understand. Aim for accurate, conventional map language and check spelling carefully; “facilities were added” or “the bin was replaced by recycling bins” would be clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses and passive constructions such as “the staff dining rooms changed into take away food and coffee bar.” However, control is uneven, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms sometimes obscure relationships between features. For example, “Firstly, the cafeteria of college renovated” lacks a clear passive verb form, and “While some new places emerged…, as well as staff dining rooms replaced…” is not a complete, well-formed contrast. The sentence beginning “While the area…” also uses conflicting clause structures. Practise forming complete clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and use one linking structure at a time. More accurate articles and plural forms would also improve clarity.
