The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
This given image depicts the map of college cafe before versus after it is redesigned.
Both designs have entrance/exit, toilet and kitchen at same location. On left from entrace there is a single bin in old design while new design has larger space to place multiple bins. Rghit in front of entrace there are two rooms which were previously used as staff dinning rooms but now are one "Take away food" and another as "Coffe bar". The Salad bar is introduced in newer design. Serving area that was just by the kithen is now converted into hot meals section. Old design has only large indoor seating however along with same indoor area, outdoor seating is provided after it is redesigned. Outdoor seating also features Barbecue spot.
Overall, the latest design provides better business model, for instance previously there was just single serving area for all food and drinks etc but later they divided it into two areas hot meals and coffe bar, along with expanding seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main changes and make relevant comparisons: the kitchen and toilets remain in place, the former staff rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, a salad bar is added, and seating expands outdoors with a barbecue. The overview that the redesign broadens food provision and seating is also grounded in the plans. This gives a clear account of the key features. To make the report more complete and precise, include a few spatial details, such as the recycling bins replacing the single bin on the eastern wall and the new southern doors connecting the café to the outdoor area. The claim that the new design has a “larger space to place multiple bins” is not shown; it depicts recycling bins, without indicating their size or number.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it introduces the comparison, describes several changes, and ends with an overall summary. Linking phrases such as “while,” “but now,” and “along with” help connect old and new features. However, the information is compressed into two long paragraphs, and the first paragraph moves rapidly between locations without a clear spatial order. Some references, such as “from entrance” and “right in front of entrance,” are difficult to interpret. Organise the details into a paragraph on unchanged features and internal changes, followed by one on the new outdoor area. Clearer transitions and more precise references would make the progression smoother and less dependent on repeated contrast words.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task vocabulary, including “staff dining rooms,” “serving area,” “Salad bar,” and “outdoor seating,” and the reader can understand the main comparisons. There are, however, several spelling errors and imprecise or informal choices, including “entrace,” “Rghit,” “dinning,” “Coffe,” and “kithen.” Phrases such as “better business model” and “spot” are less appropriate for a neutral plan description, while “larger space to place multiple bins” is not an accurate description of the visual. Aim for precise terms such as “recycling bins were installed” and “barbecue area,” and check spelling carefully. This would improve accuracy and control while retaining your relevant range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “previously used as staff dining rooms but now are…” and the concluding sentence beginning “Overall.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “before versus after it is redesigned” has an awkward tense construction; “Both designs have entrance/exit, toilet and kitchen at same location” needs articles and clearer plural agreement; and “along with same indoor area” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “On left from entrace” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Use consistent past and present forms to distinguish the two plans, and check articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the response.
