Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given figures illustrate differences in a college cafe before and after its reconstruction.

Overall, it was consisted of limited facilities including a kitchen, serveng area, staff dining rooms, tables and chairs, bin, and toilets. However, during its redevelopment, some places were repalced by new options. Additionally, the allocated area for cafe was extended by adding barbecue and outdoor seating.

There was a kitchen at north corner, beyond this there was a place allocated for food and drink serving. Furthermore, it had two staff dining rooms as well as some tables and chairs. Other than this it had a bin and some toilets at south side.

In stark contrast, the contemporary cafe has some modifications. First, serving area is transformed in to hot meals. Staff dining rooms were transformed in to take away food area and coffee bar. Simple bin was changed by recycling bin. There was a seprate salad bar at western side. The extended area was consist of new facilities including barbecue, and other whole place was utilized for outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear before-and-after account and identify the main changes: the serving counter becomes a hot-meals area, the staff dining rooms are replaced by takeaway food and a coffee bar, and recycling bins and a salad bar are added. Your overview also recognises the expansion to outdoor seating and a barbecue, so the response addresses the task and its key features. Some details are generalised or omitted, however: the outdoor area is described as if the whole extended space were seating, without mentioning the four tables, and the new southern doors are not reported. The toilets’ unchanged position and the central tables and chairs could also be used to make the comparison more complete. More precise coverage would strengthen an otherwise clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, a description of the original café, and then a comparison with its current layout. This makes the before-and-after relationship easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “In stark contrast” help signal the stages of the description, and the paragraphing is appropriate. Some connections are less precise: “beyond this” does not clearly explain the relationship between the kitchen and serving area, while “Other than this” is an awkward transition to the bin and toilets. The final sentence also combines the barbecue and outdoor seating without clearly distinguishing their locations. Use more exact spatial links and group related changes together to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “redevelopment,” “transformed,” “recycling bin,” “western side,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices communicate the main changes, and there is some variation in how you describe them. However, several spelling errors—“serveng,” “repalced,” and “seprate”—are noticeable, and some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “new options,” “Simple bin,” and “the extended area.” “Allocated area for cafe” is also unclear in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional map-description language and check spelling carefully; more precise terms for facilities and locations would make the account clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit grammatical control. For example, “it was consisted” should be “it consisted,” and “the extended area was consist of” should be “the extended area consisted of.” The sentence “Overall, it was consisted of limited facilities” also has an unclear pronoun reference. There are problems with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “at north corner” and “transformed in to.” Try to use accurate past and present forms consistently when comparing the plans, and build longer sentences around clear subjects and verbs. Proofreading these recurring patterns would improve accuracy.
