Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates the information about how a college cafetaria undergoes some changes over the period.

Overall, the cafe become considerably more developed. New amenities were added to the main canteen. Beside, some structure were demolished and new advanced features were introduced.

Before redesign, the kitchen, that was located at the north-west corner of the canteen, has a counter to serve every kind of cuisines including all type of food and drinks. In the redesigned version, this area is confined to serve only hot meals. Meanwhile, in the middle part of the cafe, two separate rooms were allocated for staff dinings. Now, one of the rooms is providing services of take away food, and the other one is serving coffee.

Outdoor seating is added in the new design with a separate space for barbecue on the western side of it. All in all, toilets were the only infrastructure that remain unchanged. Bin, which is located in front of toilets, is now expanded in the new design. Moreover, a separate salad bar is constructed, which is adjacent to the kitchen's door.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear account of the main transformation, including the change from a general serving counter to hot meals, the replacement of staff rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. The overview also identifies the cafe as more developed and notes that the toilets remain unchanged. Most details are grounded in the plans, but a few descriptions are imprecise: the two new food-and-drink sections are not explicitly shown as one room each replacing the staff rooms, and the bin is replaced by recycling bins rather than expanded. The salad bar is on the western wall, but its position is not specifically described as adjacent to the kitchen door. More precise reporting of these details would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the internal changes and the new outdoor facilities. This gives the reader a generally coherent progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. “Beside” does not work as a connector here, and “Meanwhile” introduces the staff rooms without making their relationship to the preceding kitchen detail clear. The final paragraph moves from outdoor seating to the bin and toilets, then to the salad bar, so the information is not grouped consistently by location or type of change. Organising the comparison into internal changes and external additions, and using clearer references such as “In contrast” or “On the eastern side,” would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redesigned,” “amenities,” “allocated,” “outdoor seating” and “separate space.” These choices help convey the main changes, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “cafetaria,” “staff dinings,” “advanced features,” and “expanded” for the replacement of the bin. “Cuisines” is also not the most suitable term for the food served at a cafe. Some repetition of “area” and “design” limits flexibility. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “staff dining rooms,” “facilities,” “was replaced by,” and “food and drink.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses (“the kitchen, that was located…”) and contrastive sentences (“In the redesigned version…”). The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some errors in tense, agreement, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “the cafe become” should be “the cafe became,” while “some structure were demolished” needs plural agreement (“some structures were demolished”). “Toilets were the only infrastructure that remain unchanged” also has a tense mismatch; use “remained unchanged.” The clause beginning “the kitchen, that was located…” would be more naturally formed with “which,” or by separating the location into a new sentence. Check punctuation and spacing too, as in “constructed, which.” More consistent past-tense reporting would improve accuracy.
