Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided plans show the state of a college cafe before it was redesigned compared to how it looks now.

Overall, There are a number of changes that the cafe design went through, including new additions and services which got transformed. There's the newly added salad bar and outdoor seating for customers alongside the barbecue facing them.

On one hand, the cafe used to have a serving area for all kind of food and drink below the kitchen, it transformed into hot meals area. In the main side of the cafe, the bins got turned into recycling bins. The staff dining rooms got converted into a take away food room and a coffee bar.

On the other hand, there are new additions to the cafe that have never been there before, in the main cafe interior area there's a salad bar. The exterior part of the cafe includes outdoor seating for customers and the barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main transformation clearly: the former serving area becomes a hot-meals counter, the staff dining rooms are replaced by takeaway food and a coffee bar, and new salad-bar and outdoor facilities are introduced. Your overview also highlights the barbecue and outdoor seating, giving the reader a clear sense of the redesign. These are relevant, accurate features and show good selection rather than simply listing every label. However, some important comparisons are omitted, including the unchanged kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets, as well as the addition of two doors to the outdoor area. The description of the barbecue as “facing” the seating is also less precise than its position beside the seating. More complete spatial comparisons would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The contrast markers “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal a comparison, and the main changes are grouped into related points. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the two body paragraphs partly repeat the same information: the salad bar, outdoor seating and barbecue are mentioned in both the overview and final paragraph. “Main side” and “main cafe interior area” are also vague references, so the reader has to infer where features are located. Organise the details by interior changes and exterior additions, and use more precise linking and referencing to avoid repetition and make the comparison easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “serving area,” “recycling bins,” “staff dining rooms,” “take away food,” and “outdoor seating.” These terms communicate the main changes, and “converted into” is a useful way to describe a change of function. Some choices are imprecise or informal, however: “the main side” does not clearly identify a location, while “got turned into” and “got converted into” are less suitable for a formal report. “All kind of food and drink” is also an awkward phrase. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and more formal change verbs, such as “was replaced by” or “was repurposed as.” This would improve accuracy and style without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening comparison and the sentence describing the serving area changing into a hot-meals area. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. In “Overall, There are,” the capital letter after the comma is incorrect. “All kind of food and drink” needs plural agreement (“all kinds”), and “the cafe design went through” is an awkward construction that would be clearer as “the café underwent.” The sentence beginning “On the other hand” also runs together two ideas with a comma, so it would benefit from a full stop or a conjunction. More consistently accurate articles, agreement and sentence boundaries would improve control while retaining your range of structures.
