The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided maps reveal the information about a college cafe that it looked before it renovation and how it is now.
Overall, it is crystal clear that prior today, the cafe was spacious and well- maintained, however today it is full with ample amenities. outside area is also introduced with new facilities.
At first glance, the cafe had a kitchen at its top besides it, there was a serving area( all food and drink). Then, in a rectangle shape cafe contained staff dining room separately, and the most part of the cafe was covered with tables and chairs.Next, it has a small bin in the left side, and toilets just below the bins.
At present, the cafe looks more modren as it has more facilities as compared to the past. the serving has been replaced with hot meals, and staff dining room has been altered with take away food and coffee bar. Bin area has been increase a little and there is now recycled bin. Some new services are availabe like; a salad bar in the west side, a barbecue just below the bar outside the cafe. Apart from this, outdoor seating is also eastablished. Rest of the facilities remained untouch.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change from an indoor café to one with additional facilities and outdoor seating, and your overview recognises that new services have been introduced. You also report several accurate changes, including the hot-meals counter, takeaway and coffee areas, salad bar, and barbecue. This covers the task well, while some details are less fully or accurately described: the original bin was on the eastern wall, not the left, and the new recycling bins occupy its position rather than an enlarged bin area. The outdoor seating is not located east of the café; it is along the southern side. To strengthen the response, compare the layout more precisely and mention that the toilets and central tables-and-chairs area remain.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the original plan, and a paragraph on the current layout. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the comparison. Linking expressions such as “At first glance,” “At present,” and “Apart from this” help signal progression, although some are imprecise or conversational for a plan description. Within the paragraphs, details sometimes run together, as in “tables and chairs.Next,” and the sequence of locations is not always easy to follow. The overview also introduces ideas that are not clearly supported. For a stronger progression, group changes by location and use clear contrasts such as “whereas” and “while,” with consistent punctuation between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “serving area,” “staff dining room,” “salad bar,” and “outdoor seating,” so the main features are usually identifiable. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “amenities” and “introduced,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “full with ample amenities,” “the serving has been replaced,” and “Bin area has been increase a little.” Spelling errors such as “modren,” “availabe,” and “eastablished” are noticeable, and “recycled bin” does not accurately name the recycling bins shown. These issues limit precision. Aim for standard map-description collocations and check spelling and word forms before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “however” and a clause beginning “as it has more facilities.” However, control is uneven, and errors occur in several sentence patterns. For example, “it looked before it renovation” has an incorrect verb construction and possessive form, while “the cafe was spacious … however today it is full” has unclear tense and punctuation. In “the serving has been replaced with hot meals,” the passive construction is not formed appropriately for the intended comparison. Capitalisation after full stops is also inconsistent, as in “the serving” and “the cafe.” Practise accurate past-versus-present descriptions, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for agreement and punctuation.
