IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given plans concisely illustrate the rennovations and few additions made in a college cafe.
The college cafe before rennovation had limited facilities mainly a serving area where all food and drinks were served, two staff dining rooms, and a huge hall area for tables and chairs along with a bin and toilets located at the right corner. This design of cafe seemed to be spacious but basic at the same time.
The new plan provided ample facilities making the cafe today a versatile place than earlier. Tha cafe now has a hot meals area instead of serving area, two staff dining rooms were changed to take away food room and a coffee bar. The hall area where tables and chairs consisted is the same but bins were now changed to recycling bins.
Also a new section was added in the cafe namely outdoor seating where a barbecue was also installed so that students and staff can spend time together and have some amazing food. Toilelts remained at the same right corner.
Overall new plan makes the college cafe much more versatile than what it was earlier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation from a basic café to a more varied facility, and you report several accurate comparisons: the serving area becomes a hot-meals counter, the staff dining rooms are replaced by takeaway and coffee-bar sections, the central seating remains, the bin becomes recycling bins, and the toilets stay in the same corner. The overview that the redesign makes the café more versatile is relevant. However, some important details are omitted or imprecise: the new salad bar and the two new doors to the outdoor seating are not mentioned, and the barbecue is described as being installed in the outdoor seating area rather than immediately outside the building. The description of the former layout as spacious is also an impression rather than a clear plan feature. Covering these changes more precisely would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the plans, describes the former café, moves to the current layout, and ends with a summary. Paragraphing helps distinguish the two stages, and linking expressions such as “instead of,” “but,” and “Also” make some comparisons easy to follow. The final sentence reinforces the main change. However, the progression within the description is not always systematic: features are listed without a consistent route through the plan, and the outdoor additions are introduced late without clearly distinguishing what is inside from what is outside. Some links, such as “Also,” are rather basic, while “Overall” repeats the earlier judgement. A more deliberate spatial order and clearer referencing would make cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range to describe the redesign, including “facilities,” “serving area,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” Phrases such as “instead of” and “remained at the same” help express comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “rennovations,” “Tha,” and “Toilelts,” and some choices are imprecise or informal for a plan description. “Huge hall area” and “amazing food” add subjective emphasis rather than describing the layout, while “a versatile place than earlier” is not a natural comparison. Aim for more precise terms such as “central seating area” and “additional facilities,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mixture of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the contrast in “The hall area … is the same but bins were now changed to recycling bins” and the clause beginning “where tables and chairs consisted.” The main changes remain understandable, and several sentences are structurally complete. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect accuracy. For example, “a versatile place than earlier” needs a comparative form, and “where tables and chairs consisted” uses an unsuitable verb construction; “where tables and chairs remained” would be clearer. Tense is also inconsistent in “bins were now changed,” where the present plan is being described. Work on comparative forms, natural relative clauses, and consistent present-tense descriptions to improve control.
