The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map plans illustrate an educational institute coffee shop by its earliar redesign and the current view.
Overall, the present cafe area are quite extended than earliar design, like Salad bar and Barbecue section. In addition good space created for the customer seating and some existing parts are improved.
Focusing on the Earliar deisgn there were only one entrance which extended now to two, new one beside the toilet. Also one exit door has been expanded to the near Barbeque side. Before redesign they didnt had any plan about the seating outdoor and they included that in the todays cafe.Recycling bin has been installed instead of normal bin.Toilets, tables and chairs are remain as it planned.
Kitchen has its previous shape but there is a replacement in the front side of it,from serving area(all food & drink) to hot meals. There is Salad bar built right in front of the kitchen door. Also are Barbeque section has been added near to the outside seating area. Two staff dining rooms has been replaced to separate Take away food and coffee bar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main changes and provide an overview, noting the expanded customer facilities, new outdoor seating and barbecue, and the replacement of the staff dining rooms. Several comparisons are accurate, including the hot-meals counter, salad bar, recycling bins and unchanged toilets and central seating. This meets the task well, with some details more fully reported than others. However, the overview’s claim that the café is “quite extended” is not clearly supported: the plan shows added facilities, but does not establish that the indoor area is larger. The entrance description is also inaccurate: the original east-side entrance remains, while two new doors lead from the south wall to outdoor seating; they are not beside the toilets. More precise coverage of these locations would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. The sequence from the earlier plan to the current layout is generally understandable, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Also” and “instead of” help connect information. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the third paragraph moves from entrances to outdoor seating, bins and unchanged features without a clear spatial or thematic order. Some links are also awkward or unclear, as in “Also are Barbeque section,” and “Toilets, tables and chairs are remain as it planned” interrupts the comparison. Grouping changes by location or by additions and replacements, and using clearer reference phrases, would make the organisation more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “installed,” “seating,” “serving area” and “outdoor.” These choices communicate several important changes, and the response shows some range beyond basic labels. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “earliar” and “deisgn” recur, “coffee shop” is less accurate than “café,” and “extended” does not clearly express the intended change in facilities. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “by its earliar redesign” and “included that in the todays cafe.” Use the plan’s labels where possible and practise standard collocations for describing additions, removals and replacements. This would make the vocabulary more reliable and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “Kitchen has its previous shape but there is a replacement…” and the comparison “instead of normal bin.” The main ideas are usually recoverable, but errors in sentence structure, tense, agreement and articles are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to read. For example, “the present cafe area are” has subject–verb disagreement, while “they didnt had” combines incompatible verb forms. “Two staff dining rooms has been replaced” also has incorrect agreement and passive construction, and “Toilets, tables and chairs are remain” uses an unnecessary auxiliary. Work on consistent past-tense descriptions, passive forms for changes, and complete sentence patterns; careful punctuation and spacing would also improve control.
