Student answer (Band 6.5)

The map diagram illustrasted a campus cafe before and after the redevelopment.

Overall, an entire new section has been added for Barbcue and Outdoor seating in the new plan, and the previous staff reserved areas have been converted to recreational hubs.

On the past design, the staff dining rooms were situated at the top-middle space, just north to the tabes and chairs. Kitchen and the respective serving were at the north-west corner, with the toilets at the bottom-right of the blue-print. The bin lied just above the toilets.

The in the new redeveloped cafe blue-print, the cafe's original space was extended on the bottom, which facilated new areas, such as Barbecue area on the left corner as well as the outdoor seating to its right. Also, the salad bar, new entity, was added in between the Kitchen section and the Barbecue. The staff dining rooms in the old map were reconstruced to Take away food and Coffee bar. The Serving area was replaced by Hot meals along with the bin to recyling bins at the same spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes, especially the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue area and the conversion of the staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee facilities. Most locations and changes you report match the plans, including the kitchen and toilets remaining in place and the bin becoming recycling bins. This covers the task well and selects relevant features. However, some details are imprecise: the salad bar is on the western wall, not between the kitchen and barbecue, and the new outdoor area is south of the café rather than simply an extension of its interior. You also omit the entrance and the central seating area, so the account is not fully detailed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, a summary of the main changes, and separate descriptions of the former and current layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the past design” and “in the new redeveloped cafe” signal the shift between plans. The overview also helps establish the most important transformation. To make the progression more consistently clear, group details by location or by what stayed and changed, rather than moving between the southern additions, salad bar, northern facilities and serving counter. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “The in the new redeveloped cafe blue-print,” and “along with the bin to recyling bins at the same spot” would benefit from a cleaner comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “situated,” “converted,” “replaced,” “north-west corner” and “bottom-right.” These choices help communicate locations and changes, and the response attempts some less common expressions such as “recreational hubs.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “staff reserved areas,” “the bin lied,” and “new entity” do not describe the facilities naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “illustrasted,” “Barbcue,” “tabes,” “facilated,” “reconstruced” and “recyling.” Use standard plan-description terms such as “staff dining rooms,” “was located,” and “facility,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence and longer sentences that compare the two layouts. Some basic structures are controlled, for example, “the toilets at the bottom-right of the blue-print” and “The staff dining rooms … were reconstruced to Take away food and Coffee bar.” However, several sentences contain grammatical problems that make the relationships between details less clear. “The in the new redeveloped cafe blue-print” has a faulty opening, while “the cafe's original space was extended on the bottom, which facilated new areas” has an unclear relative clause. The phrase “just north to the tabes and chairs” also uses an incorrect preposition. Practise accurate sentence openings and preposition patterns, and use past and present forms consistently when comparing the plans.
