Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map diagram illustrates changes in a university cafe after the recent renovation.

Overall, the layout has been modernized with provision for more seating areas and the reconfigaration of reserved rooms for the staff to wider variety of food and drink counters.

In the original layout, the most of the centeral area was occupied by tables and chairs. To the top of this area contained dining rooms for staff. The kitchen along with the food and drink service counters were situated at the north-west corner of the map, while the toilets were located at the south-east corner, with the single bin to the opposite.

After reconstruction, the serving area has been expanded to accomodate wilder range of people. The outdoor seating has been introduced here with barbecue corner at the northern wall. The kitchen area with the food counters have been redeveloped to kitchen with hot meal counters, while the previous staff dining rooms have been converted into a broaded chain of take way food and coffee bar. The toilets in the new layout have remained in the same position, but the single bin has been updated to numerous recycling bins, while a new salad bar has opened opposite to them in the central-left corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main purpose of the redesign and give a clear overview: the former staff rooms have become food and drink counters, and the café now offers additional seating. You also accurately note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place and that the bin provision has changed. This covers the task well, but some details are incomplete or unclear. In particular, the outdoor seating is south of the building, reached through new doors in the southern wall, and the barbecue is to the south-west; describing it as being at the “northern wall” misrepresents its position. The claim that the serving area was expanded is not clearly supported, and the new salad bar’s location is imprecise. More precise reporting of these changes would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the original and redesigned layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and transitions such as “In the original layout” and “After reconstruction” help signal the shift between plans. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “with the single bin to the opposite” does not clearly identify what it is opposite, while the long final paragraph combines several changes without consistently distinguishing their locations. The overview also introduces “more seating areas” but the body does not clearly connect this to the outdoor tables. Use clearer spatial references and group related changes—for example, indoor counters, facilities, and outdoor additions—to make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesign, including “reconfiguration,” “converted,” “remained,” and “introduced.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “wilder range of people,” “broaded chain,” and “opened opposite to them.” There are also spelling errors in “reconfigaration,” “accomodate,” and “centeral,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrases, including “serving area has been expanded,” do not precisely describe the plan. Aim for standard map-description language and check spelling: for example, use “a wider range of food options,” “a larger counter area” only if supported, and “located opposite the recycling bins” where the position is clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview and several clauses linked with “while” and “but.” The main message is usually clear, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “To the top of this area contained dining rooms” lacks a clear subject and needs restructuring, such as “Dining rooms for staff were located along the top of this area.” In “the kitchen area with the food counters have been redeveloped,” the subject and verb do not agree; “area … has” would be appropriate. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “the most of the centeral area” and “with the single bin to the opposite.” Greater control of subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence patterns would make the complex descriptions more reliable.
