Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the transformation of college cafeteria.
Overall, the cafe has been modernised with a greater emphasis on recreation and community facilities, by replacing the former open spaces and basic amenities.
In past, the cafe featured a large open space for tables and chairs in the center, bordered by a bin and toilets on the right hand side. In the north-west area corner there was a kitchen at back and serving area on the front. In the middle of the room, the staff dining rooms were presented. The main entrance to cafeteria was located on the east side of the room.
By present, the cafe had significant changes. The middle area looks much more organised. Take away food and coffee bar was added, replacing staff dining rooms. Barbecue and outdoor seating area was added in the south. A new salad bar was introduced in between kitchen and barbecue stand. The cafe gives the welcoming environment with modern layout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a clear overview that the café has been modernised and identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway food and a coffee bar, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. Most of these details match the plans. However, some locations are misreported: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not in the middle, and the salad bar is on the western wall rather than between the kitchen and barbecue. The description also omits notable changes such as the hot-meals counter, recycling bins, and the new southern doors. Your account addresses the main transformation, but some features are less fully and accurately covered than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph about the former layout and one about the current café. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In past” and “By present” signal the shift between time periods. The progression is generally logical, but some references and transitions are awkward, and the final paragraph moves quickly from indoor changes to outdoor facilities without describing the layout systematically. Grouping changes by area—for example, north wall, western side, and southern exterior—would make the comparison more precise. The organisation is effective overall, though cohesion is not consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “transformation,” “modernised,” “replacing,” and “introduced.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, such as “the transformation of college cafeteria,” “in the north-west area corner,” and “the cafe gives the welcoming environment.” “The middle area looks much more organised” is also vague for a plan description. More precise location language and standard map vocabulary would improve accuracy and flexibility. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate and includes some ambitious choices, but occasional word-choice and phrasing errors limit precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the overview sentence uses a participial phrase to summarise the redesign. However, some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in “transformation of college cafeteria” and “In past,” while “Take away food and coffee bar was added” has a subject–verb agreement problem and needs clearer plural marking. Tense choices are also inconsistent: “By present” is followed by “had significant changes,” although the plans compare the past with the current layout. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce accuracy. Check articles, agreement, and consistent past-versus-present forms when revising.
