The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The blueprint illustrates the college cafe before it was redeveloped and transformation of look now.

Looking at the first glance, the northern area of cafe had kitchen and serving area for all food and drink. Moreover, cornermost point of eastsouth zone was built for toilets and above that dustbin was kept to gather waste. The middle area were constructed for sitting where arrangement for tables and chairs was made ; whereas, the way to two staff dining rooms was from that zone only.

Examining the other layout after redesigned many new facilities had been added to the area. First and foremost, dining rooms were replaced with the take away food and coffee bar. Also, barbecue and outdoor sitting areas was developed along with newly inaugarted salad bar at the west zone of the cafe.

The kitchen was at the same place but serving area was replaced with the hot meals zone and tables and chairs was kept at the same place as before.

Overall, many new amenities were added to the cafe after redevelopment and now it looks more lavish and attractive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, the serving counter changes to hot meals, and outdoor seating with a barbecue and a salad bar is added. You also correctly note that the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain in place. This gives a relevant overview of the redesign. However, some important details are omitted or unclear, including the new southern doors, the recycling bins replacing the single bin, and the position of the salad bar along the western wall. The description of the original layout is also imprecise: the staff rooms were along the north wall, rather than simply accessed from the central zone. Covering these features more precisely would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall sequence: it describes the original café, moves to the redesigned layout, and ends with a summary. Paragraphing helps distinguish the two plans, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “whereas,” and “Overall” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the progression within paragraphs is not always easy to follow. For example, the first paragraph moves from the kitchen to the toilets and then to the seating and staff rooms without a consistent spatial route. The phrase “Examining the other layout after redesigned” also makes the shift between plans awkward. Grouping details by location or by what changed and what stayed the same would create clearer progression and more precise connections.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesign, including “redeveloped,” “replaced,” “facilities,” and “arrangement.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the reader can generally understand your account. However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise for a plan description, such as “transformation of look now,” “corner-most point of eastsouth zone,” and “newly inaugurated salad bar.” “Lavish and attractive” is also an unsupported judgement rather than a neutral description of the plan. Spelling errors such as “inaugarted” reduce accuracy. Aim for straightforward, precise location and change vocabulary, and check collocations and spelling so that your word choices sound natural in an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a sentence beginning “Looking at the first glance.” The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “The middle area were constructed” and “outdoor sitting areas was developed”; these should use singular “was” for the area or plural “were” for the areas. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “before it was redeveloped and transformation of look now” and “after redesigned.” Punctuation is sometimes faulty, with missing spaces after commas and full stops. More consistent tense, agreement, and article use would make your descriptions clearer while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
