The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart shows the transformation of college cafe, how it looks before and how it looks after the renovation.
Alot of things looks different after the renovation as they replaced the staff dinning rooms with take away food and coffee bar. Although, they introduced outdoor dinning which looks really impressive and attractive thing.
Outdoor dining is one of the most attractive thing because many people like to sit in a calm environment rather than indoor dining. As a result, many people go there to enjoy food and beautiful environment. On the otherhand, take away food is an amazing thing about cafe as if people failed to finish the food they can pack the food and take it, which can attract more people.
By adding barbecue, the cafe serve more food items, so the people can choose and order food, what they desires to eat. In addition, they aslo extend the bin area according to their need.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad change from staff dining rooms to takeaway food and a coffee bar, and you mention the new outdoor dining and barbecue. However, the response only partially reports the plans: it gives little account of the layout and omits several clear changes, including the salad bar, the hot-meals counter, and the continued position of the toilets and central seating. The overview is also mixed with unsupported opinions and speculation about why customers would use the facilities, such as saying outdoor dining is attractive or takeaway will attract more people. The claim that the cafe extended the bin area is inaccurate; the plan shows recycling bins replacing the bin. Focus on describing and comparing visible features rather than explaining their presumed benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the opening introduces the before-and-after plans, and the response then discusses changes to dining and food services. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “As a result,” and “In addition” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the response shifts from describing the plans to general claims about customer preferences and food choices. “Although” does not introduce a complete contrast, and “On the otherhand” is used to connect another positive opinion rather than a clear opposing point. There is no systematic comparison of the old and new layout. Grouping changes by location or by what was retained and added would make the account easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “renovation,” “staff dining rooms,” “take away food,” “coffee bar,” and “outdoor dining,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for a plan description. “Attractive thing” is repeated and evaluative, while “extend the bin area” does not accurately describe the recycling bins shown. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “Alot,” “dinning,” “otherhand,” and “aslo.” More precise terms such as “replaced,” “added,” “retained,” and “located” would help report changes clearly and avoid unsupported commentary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “Although, they introduced outdoor dinning…” and “if people failed to finish the food they can pack the food and take it.” Some sentence structures communicate the intended meaning, but errors remain in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. In “Alot of things looks different,” the plural subject requires “look,” while “transformation of college cafe” needs an article. “Although” is incorrectly followed by a comma and a standalone clause, and the sentence beginning “By adding barbecue” has a subject–verb agreement error in “the cafe serve.” The final phrase “what they desires to eat” also has an incorrect verb form. More accurate control of these patterns would make the ideas easier to read.
