The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

THE GIVEN BLUEPRINT IS A PICTORIAL REPRESENTATION OF A COLLEGE CAFE BEFORE IT WAS RENOVATED AND CURRENT APPEARANCE.

OVERALL, IT IS CRYSTAL CLEAR THAT THE LOCATION OF KITCHEN, SITTING AREA AND REST ROOMS HAS REMAINED UNCHANGED AFTER THE MODERNISATION OF CAFE.

A CURSORY GLANCE AT THE MAP REVEALS THAT BEFORE THE REDEVELOPMENT OF A CAFE, ON THE TOP-LEFT CORNER, THERE WAS A KITCHEN, WITH A SERVING AREA FOR ALL KINDS OF MEALS. MOREOVER, THE MAIN DINING HALL WAS POSITIONED IN THE LOWER AREA OF THE CAFE, WHERE TABLES AND CHAIRS WERE ARRANGED. IN THIS AREA, THERE WERE TWO SPEACIAL DINING ROOMS FOR STAFF IN THE UPPER-MIDDLE ZONE. ALSO, ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE, THE BIN WAS PLACED NEAR THE WALL AND TOILETS WERE LOCATED ON THE LOWER-RIGHT CORNER.

MOVING TO THE PRESENT CAFE, IT CAN BE OBSERVED THAT IN THE KITCHEN AREA, SERVING SECTION HAS REPLACED WITH HOT MEALS. THE TAKE AWAY FOOD ROOM AND COFFEE BAR HAS BUILT IN THE PLACE OF STAFF DINING ROOMS. IN ADDITION, THE AREA OF BIN HAS WIDENED BY INTRODUCING RECYCLING BINS. SALAD BAR HAS ALSO MADE IN THE LEFT-SIDED WALL. FURTHERMORE, OUTDOOR SEATING ARRANGEMENT HAS MADE OUTSIDE THE HALL AND BARBECUE HAS ALSO BUILT ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE.

IN CONCLUSION, THE CAFE HAS BEEN REDEVELOPED IN ORDER TO WELCOME LARGE SUM OF CUSTOMERS BY INTRODUCING COFFEE BAR, SALAD BAR AND ADDITIONAL SEATING ARRANGEMENT IN THE OPEN AREA.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a relevant overview, identifying that the kitchen, central seating area and toilets remain in place, and you describe several key changes, including the new takeaway and coffee-bar sections, salad bar, recycling bins and outdoor facilities. This covers the main before-and-after picture. Some details, however, are less fully or precisely reported: the serving counter is relabelled for hot meals, rather than the serving section being replaced, and the new outdoor seating is reached through doors in the southern wall. The claim that the redesign was intended to welcome more customers is not shown by the plans, so avoid inferring purpose. The response already selects and compares important features; more exact descriptions of what changed and what stayed the same would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an overview, a description of the former layout, a paragraph on the current café, and a concluding statement. The progression from the old plan to the new one is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Moving to the present cafe” signal the shift effectively. Some linking is mechanical, however, with repeated “Moreover,” “Also,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore.” The final “In conclusion” repeats the general idea of redevelopment rather than adding a useful comparison. A few references are also imprecise: “In this area” could refer to the dining hall or the café as a whole. Use fewer formulaic transitions and organise details by location or by what has changed and remained.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “renovated,” “positioned,” “located,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating arrangement.” Some less common choices show ambition, but several are inaccurate or unnatural in this context: “crystal clear” is an awkward way to introduce an overview, “the area of bin has widened” does not describe the change shown, and “serving section” is less precise than “serving counter.” There are also spelling errors such as “speacial,” alongside inconsistent forms such as “cafe” and “café.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce precision. Prefer straightforward, map-specific terms and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “where” and “in order to,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “serving section has replaced with hot meals” needs a passive form (“has been replaced by”), while “The take away food room and coffee bar has built” needs both a passive construction and plural agreement (“have been built”). Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing or inaccurate, as in “on the lower-right corner” and “in the left-sided wall.” The all-capital presentation and inconsistent punctuation make sentence boundaries less polished. Review passive forms for changes to a plan, subject–verb agreement, and article use; these corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complicated sentences.
