The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The following two charts shows the modification of the college cafe before redesigned and its appearance after the nenovation.
Overall, they made several changes to improve its layout and facilities. The original design included a kitchen, serving area, staff dining rooms, a large sitting area, a bin, and toilets. The most noticable developments are the addition of a salad bar, a coffee bar, a takeaway food, recycling bins, and outdoor seating area.
Before the renovation, the kitchen and serving area, which offered all food and drinks was located on the uper left corner of the cafe. The majority of the remaining space was occupied by sitting area. In addition, there were two separate staff dining rooms in the middle of the cafe. The toilets were situated in the right bottom of the corner, while a bin was placed along the right hand wall.
In the current layout, the kitchen remains the same, but the former serving area has been replaced by a section for hot meals. Two new facilities, namely take away food counter and coffee bar, have been established next to the kitchen. A salad bar has also been added along the left hand wall. Meanwhile, the two staff dining rooms has been removed. Furthermore, the cafe now has an outdoor dining with several tables and chairs, as well as barbecue facility. The original bin has been replaced with recycling bins, while the toilet remains the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address the task clearly and give a useful overview of the main changes, especially the new food facilities and outdoor seating. The comparison is generally accurate: you note that the kitchen remains, the serving counter becomes a hot-meals section, the staff dining rooms are removed, and the bin is replaced by recycling bins. The description also covers the toilets and the new barbecue area. To make the account more complete and precise, include the two new doors in the southern wall that connect the café to the outdoor seating, and avoid saying the kitchen remains “the same” without clarifying that its position is unchanged. The main features are selected appropriately, although a few spatial details could be developed further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on the original plan and one on the current layout. This makes the before-and-after comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Meanwhile,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between details. Some connections are slightly mechanical, however, and the overview repeats information that is then listed again in the body. The sentence about the new facilities being “next to the kitchen” could also be more carefully organised to distinguish their positions. For stronger cohesion, group changes by location or function and use concise references such as “these new counters” where the meaning is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned plan, including “replaced,” “established,” “situated,” and “occupied.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or awkward wording. There are spelling errors such as “nenovation,” “noticable,” and “uper,” while phrases including “a takeaway food” and “an outdoor dining” are not natural collocations. “Charts” is also less suitable than “plans” for this visual. Aim for more precise map vocabulary and check spelling and countability; this would make the description sound more fluent and controlled without changing its clear overall message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the kitchen and serving area, which offered all food and drinks” and a contrastive structure in “the kitchen remains the same, but…”. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, though some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The following two charts shows” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the two staff dining rooms has been removed” should use a plural verb. The phrase “in the right bottom of the corner” also has an awkward grammatical construction, and missing spaces after full stops affect punctuation. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the varied structures you already attempt.
