The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Ther map illustrates a college cafe which is redesigned and how is it looking after that implementation.

Overall, there are some expansions in bins section. Additionally, there are now specific food sections and an outdoor seatings are arranged alongside a barbecue section.

First of all, there can be seen several new sections such as proper seating arrangements which are outdoors and there is a seperate barbecue section right in that area. Moreover, previously the trash system was congested in the cafe, which is now on a wide area where recycles bins are also installed.

Another major changing is that food sections are divided into their relevance such as there is now a coffee bar which replaced the staff dining rooms. Another thing is that place is designed with a salad bar whereas hot meals replaced the serving area which also is categroziied into a eating section. All the other sections are quite same with no changes being made on that places.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify several important changes, including the new outdoor seating and barbecue, the addition of a coffee bar and salad bar, and the replacement of the general serving area with a hot-meals counter. Your overview also recognises that the café now has more specialised food facilities. These points address the task and are mostly grounded in the plans. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: the bins are replaced by recycling bins in the same position, rather than moved to a wider area, and the outdoor seating is not described as an expansion of the bins section. You also say the coffee bar replaced the staff dining rooms, but omit the separate takeaway-food section. To strengthen the response, describe the main spatial changes more precisely and note that the kitchen, central tables and toilets remain.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall summary and two paragraphs describing changes. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “First of all” and “Another major changing” help signal progression. However, the organisation is not consistently clear because several changes are grouped together without a precise spatial relationship. For example, the sentence beginning “Moreover, previously the trash system…” combines a claim about congestion with the recycling-bin change, making the comparison difficult to follow. “All the other sections” is also vague and does not clearly identify what remains unchanged. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the details by location or by what was added, replaced and retained; clearer references would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “outdoor seating,” “barbecue,” “coffee bar,” “salad bar” and “recycling bins,” which allows the reader to recognise the main facilities. There is also an attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “replaced” and “divided.” However, the range is limited by imprecise or unnatural expressions, including “trash system was congested,” “proper seating arrangements,” and “divided into their relevance.” Several word-form or spelling errors, such as “seperate” and “categroziied,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map-description vocabulary and natural collocations, for example, say that the bin was replaced by recycling bins in the same location, rather than describing a “trash system.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using clauses introduced by “which” and “whereas,” as in “hot meals replaced the serving area which also is categroziied into a eating section.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, and several sentence patterns are faulty. The opening, “The map illustrates a college cafe which is redesigned and how is it looking,” has an incorrect relative-clause structure and tense. Other examples include “an outdoor seatings are arranged” and “Another major changing,” where agreement or grammatical form is not controlled. Articles and verb forms also need attention, as in “a eating section.” Practise accurate past-versus-present comparisons and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb before adding complex clauses.
