The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided map illustrates the renovation of the collage cafe before and how it looks in present time.

Overall, it is clearly seen that there are several changes that have been done and many new facilities have been constructed in recent times.

Firstly, in this cafe there was only indoor seating with some tables and chairs, but currently there is outdoor seating that has been developed with a new barbecue setup.

Moreover, the staff dining rooms are converted into two different rooms that take away food, and the other one is a coffee bar. Now, the previous litter area is used as a recycling bin area.

Additionally, a new salad bar is made in the cafe near indoor seating, whereas the kitchen still remains the same. Furthermore, the serving section of all meals is renovated into a hot meals area. As we can see, some changes also have been made in the cafe structure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify several important changes accurately: the new outdoor seating and barbecue, the conversion of the staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee areas, the addition of a salad bar, and the replacement of the bin with recycling bins. You also note that the kitchen remains and the serving counter now offers hot meals. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the main redesign features. However, some details are less fully reported: the toilets remain in the same position, and two new doors connect the café to the outdoor seating. The statement that “some changes also have been made in the cafe structure” is vague rather than a specific comparison. More precise coverage of these features would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a general overview, and paragraphs describing changes. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Additionally” help signal the points being added, and the ideas are generally easy to follow. However, the progression is somewhat list-like, with several changes grouped together without a clear spatial or thematic pattern. The final sentence, “some changes also have been made in the cafe structure,” repeats the general idea of change without adding information. Some references could also be more precise—for example, “the other one” requires the reader to infer which room is meant. Grouping indoor changes together and then describing the outdoor additions would create a more controlled progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “converted,” “recycling,” “outdoor seating,” and “barbecue,” so the main changes are understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording, such as “renovated into” and “developed.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “collage cafe” appears to be a spelling error for “college café,” “litter area” is not an accurate label for the former bin location, and “barbecue setup” is less suitable than a concise description of the facility. Phrases such as “in present time” and “new facilities have been constructed in recent times” are awkward and unnecessarily broad. More precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations would improve clarity and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a clause beginning “that take away food.” Most sentences communicate the intended changes, and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical problems remain, however. The opening phrase “before and how it looks in present time” is not formed naturally, while “there are several changes that have been done” uses an awkward passive construction. In “the staff dining rooms are converted,” the tense should reflect a completed redesign, and “the other one is a coffee bar” would make the comparison clearer. The sentence beginning “Moreover” also has an unclear structure. More consistent past-to-present tense choices and carefully checked clause construction would strengthen accuracy.
